United Way is not a relief agency. It's primary function is to raise money to be distributed to local non-profit agencies for various programs such as The Salvation Army, The American Cancer Society, Big Brothers/Big Sisters, etc.

You'd expect to see the Salvation Army at a disaster site. Not United Way.

The Red Cross has been in the 6 states affected by this event since December 11.

Here's a report from one of their volunteers in Mayfield several days ago.

The Red Cross may be there but nobody I have talked to has seen them.

I deleted my derogatory comments about certain "charities". Not what I wanted this thread to be about.

Sister said my nephew finally lost his cool. Not at anybody in our area but at some out of state relatives who put his cell number on Facebook. As if he didn't have enough problems. They have taken it off.

We drove to the court square and thru part of town on our way north today. My wife was very quiet. We cannot understand how the death toll was as small as it it.

The blood donation part of the Red Cross is completely different from the disaster relief. I donate blood and platelets on a regular basis.

I donated to United Way and Red Cross for over thirty years. I feel like I wasted my money.

Good for you. (y) My wife donates blood very often at the local blood bank ( several gallons as far as we can tell ).

As for donating to United Way, after a few things came out about overhead costs, we decided to donate directly to the organizations that we want to support and skip the middle man.

Yes, we've been watching the news and seeing them account for a lot of living missing folks that were presumed dead. While that's great news, there's still been a tragic loss of life, and even one is too many.

Good luck to your family. These things take years, not weeks or months, to get sorted out.

No words needed. Notice in picture on the right that the kernels are still on the cob INSIDE the tractor.

Man. Think about how many structures/vehicles/equipment were damaged by flying debris.

There was a tornado near hear back in the early 80s. Sucked the roof off of the upper story of a tri-level house and tossed it about 1/4 mile away. But the weird thing was as the roof came off, it pulled the top plates off the studs, the insulation out of the walls, and sucked the curtains in behind the window molding. Didn't break any windows. Left all of the furniture and belongings in the 4 rooms under where the roof was.

Later in life it became apparent how important it is to have proper construction as that roof wasn't really tied to anything very well. It was darn near intact laying in the church lawn where it landed.

Drove by a tornado site yesterday that had crossed I40, just a large swath of trees down every which way.

That's the old style hurricane clip that was code 30 years ago. I think the theory that wall sheathing nailed to the plate would make the wall a unit, but you know, it's the top of the wall, and one nail should do it, right? New codes often require strapping all the way from the foundation to the truss. Great in an earthquake. In a direct hit from a tornado, I dunno. In any tornado that strong, it's a question of how much of the house do you want it to take? Good tie-downs are great if you have a near miss.

^^^ The strongest Hurricanes to come ashore are in the 150MPH range, usually much less, more in the 100-125 range. They're spread out over wide areas which means a single building is likely to get winds from one direction at a time. They move across land at around 10MPH generally, so you have sustained winds longer. Few buildings survive getting hit by both sides of the eyewall at Cat 4 or 5 speeds, but many survive Cat 3 and below.

Winds in this storm were estimated at 190MPH or greater over a width of around a mile and was moving across land at around 60MPH, covering nearly 170 miles in about 3 hours. That means a single building was exposed to rapidly twisting forces from multiple directions in just a few minutes. Humans can't build much that will withstand that, short of poured concrete with rebar. But even at that, the Graves County jail was destroyed and jails are not built lightly.

The jail was destroyed and right across the street the CVS Pharmacy only had cosmetic damage and was open as soon as a generator was brought in. THAT building must have been built like a fortress. That jail is the only building everybody is glad to see gone. It was the ugliest thing ever built in town.

Vice President Mike Pence showed up yesterday. From our Sheriff:

Graves County Sheriff's Office

12-18-21
While enroute to pick some supplies at our command post behind the courthouse, I drove up on a small crowd. When I exited my truck, I was greeted by Vice President Mike Pence.
This man came to our town, no advanced notice, no fanfare, and intentionally did not want to hinder our efforts. I had a conversation with him and he said to please relay his sincere thoughts and prayers for all of us.
He then asked to pray with us there on that spot. He was humble, kind, and genuine. It was an honor.
Sheriff Jon Hayden

Our Sheriff and his deputies have done an outstanding job during this tragedy. They were doing a good job before the event having to spend a great deal of effort fighting the meth epidemic. Definitely not the bumbling, corrupt sheriff's office portrayed on most TV shows. People have a lot of respect for the Department.
