I'd go through the area with a subsoiler first. That's what I did. I ended up discovering where my telephone line was.

It really isn't against the "law" to not run the tractor at full 540 pto speed. While work performed is not increased, but rather decreased proportionally, the tiller & the tractor might like it better.

You can also water the area that you are tilling to soften the soil up. I find that if I till undisturbed soil the tiller can beat you up pretty bad. Break it up with what ever you have then till. You will get better results and less wear and tear on your equipment.
