FInally had time to really work with the 4 in 1 bu

I finally got out and spent some time with the 4 in 1 bucket today. Besides grabbing stuff and dragging it around, I was working my gravel driveway which gets somewhat washed out with a heavy rain. Then I end up moving some of the gravel that has collected down at the bottom, back up to the top and middle as well as filling and smoothing out the ruts created by the running water.

(remind me next time not to put a driveway straight down a mountainside /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif)

Anyway, the more I worked with the bucket, the more fun I had. This thing is really versatile! With a little practice, I was able to scrape, dig, plow and level, all with one tool!

I've got to agree....the 4n1 is a great addition to the PT implement fleet /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif It took just a little getting used to, what with angles of attack with the mouth open and all, but definately worth the effort!!!

Just don't use 'road mix', that stuff that consists of crushed stone from 1" to dust! It works ok for a flat parking lot, but with any elevation change, it will wash out and rut real quick, and produce clouds of dust in dry weather!!

I use 1" crushed granite. It packs down nicely and stays put, isn't too coarse to spread or rough to walk on, and is nearly dust free!!

14....I've been thinking of something different for my lane...getting tired of raking the stone from my grass area back into the driveway after a winter of snowplowing. How will the granite stand up to a winter of snowplowing.....would more of this stay in the driveway as compared to say 2B stone? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

I doubt that just being granite makes that much difference, although the granite is harder and more abrasion resistant than limestone or sandstone. I have had equal success with Washed Crushed 1" Limestone when I lived in IL and NY.

The quarry here in NC sells crushed granite while in IL and NY they quarry limestone. It's whichever is cheap and local.

The important thing is to have it large enough to stay put when water runs through it. Small chips and dust will quickly wash out of Road Mix.

I am using #67 Washed Crushed Granite, which costs me $220 per 33,000# load, delivered and truck spread. My LM bucket holds about 700#.

Larger than 1" to 1-1/2" stone will not compact as well. It helps to loosen the existing surface before spreading new stone. Don't apply more than 2" deep.

When snow plowing, try to leave about an inch of snow on top of the stone, which will be compacted into the stone and make a good base!

Trenching the edges discourages migration of the stone and grass, and keeps the edge location from wandering.
