I use 5 gallon cans, only load them with about 4 gallons of fuel just to make them easier to lift and less likely to spill (something I have only done 1 time and learned a very valuable lesson from /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif)

In the winter you probably will want to add a commercial "anti-gel" when the temp are regularly in the 30's and lower.

From my experience I've had no problems with alge or mold growth in diesel, but I don't really keep much on hand so I go through the can in a week when I'm busy and maybe in 60 days when I'm not using the tractor much. If I stored the fuel for 4 or 5 months at a time I suppose I might run into alge problems? But I've never had a problem given the short term storage I have. I don't like the idea of having too much extra fuel in the garage anyway.

IF I WAS YOU, I would start out with 5 gallon can, fill it and use it to fill your tank. Then get it refilled and leave it in your garage/barn. AFTER you see how frequently or infrequently you need to go to the gas station to refill your fuel can, then you can decide if you need multiple cans or a larger storage tank system. Give yourself some time to see how much you are using your tractor. I spent a good deal of time this weekend tilling the field, and doing other chores, I think I used 1/4 of a tank!

I have a 6.5 gallon yellow container that I usually fill only about 5 gallons in. My tank holds 7 gallons and goes a long ways.

That's the part that surprised me the most. Diesel CUTs use so little fuel! It's really amazing compared to the LT I am used to. I've found a 5 gallon container (filled to 4) is really all I need. As Murph says, goes a long way.

Cliff, excellent point about the LT versus the CUT. I keep 2 5-gallon gas cans for the LT and I use 1 full can each time we cut the lawn. So 2 cans lasts 14 days, but 1 5-gallon diesel can may last me an average of 30 days and I put more hours on the CUTs.

Hi Noodlearm,

I recently purchased a new tractor and I'm going today to my local bulk fuel distributor and get a 55 gallon drum of diesel, bring it home in my truck and transfer it to another drum. I bought an inexpensive barrell pump (10 bucks) from Harbor Freight to transfer fuel. Small gans are a hassle with a loader on my kubota.

Thanks for the suggestions. I am used to cutting about 5 acres wuth a garden tractor and that definately takes more than 5 gallons. I think my fuel take is 7.9 gallons so based on everything you guys are saying, that should get me through more than 2 cuts it seems with room to spare for other chores. I hope thats the case. As for winter storage, I can always move it into the heated garage.

My cousin gave me a couple of 30 gallon plastic roundup barrels. They clean up good and are made of high density polyethylene. Had a barrel pump formerly used for motor oil laying around. I have a 5 gallon bucket with the lid and pour spout on which I use for a catch can to stick the hose in when I finish filling my tractors. Pretty much spill free. The spout on this pump is just the right size to slide a piece of garden hose on. When one barrel gets low I take the other down to the local distributor and get off road diesel. Make sure the bungs are screwed in tight. Strap it in good and when I get it home I can lay it down in the pickup bed and tilt it down to the ground and horse it around into place. If a one legged fat man can do it you can to.

So does that mean Bob that we don't allowit to Iowa? </font>

It simply implies that none of the votes in Iowa actually counted for anything. It is a sad comentary, but it is true in this case. During the primaries (for both parties) the folks in Iowa and many others seem to place a lot of weight on the state of Iowa. So with that emphasis placed by the parties, we end up with a situation where the election was decided without any of their votes. It has nothing to do with either party, or either candidate or any political position. It is just that due to a lot of reasons this year, they don't matter. Like I said, it is a sad commentary. But I enjoy the irony of the fact that the election effectively excluded one of the states that, during the primary process is hoisted above the other states as being important.
