Kenmac,
They are the ultimate 4X4! they are what a Hummer wants to be when it grows up! They can go just about anywhere, have a fording depth of over 40" in standing water. 20 speed gear box, which gears down to 4000 to 1! Have portal axles with full air lockers, which give it a ground clearance of 18" at the bottom of the diff. Shift on the fly from 2 wheel to 4 wheel and full lock. Can haul over 4 1/2 tons and can turn in a 32' circle. will tow up to 300 tons!! Have full hydraulics front and rear as well as PTO's. Do a goggle search and you can be reading for hours. They are a tractor that can do 60mph! You can go here for some more photos and info.Von vonsmog

Definitely 4x4 WITH on the go locking diffs. BTW Von, that's the model I have. It came with a three point and a 20 ton winch mounted at the rear on a 3/4" plate added to the bed for weight.

Von,
I went back through the old pictures of the renovation on your web site for about the fifth time. If I lived near you, I'd work for you for free and call it college.

Thanks ,I have never seen any. What are they used for const work, etc;? I have never seen any on const. sites. Sorry for the questions .I have never seen or heard of them. Are all unimogs built by Case ? Can you still buy them new ?Is there a unimog following ?Are they diesel or gas ? Just thought I would ask you instead of a search since you have several.
Thanks

They are a multi-use utility vehicle. The Military has a lot of them fitted with dump beds, front end loaders and back-hoes.

The Germans use them for roads maintenance. They can be configured from snow plows to street sweepers.

Now the fun begins. The plan is to sell one and fix the other. Will keep everyone up to date on the new project! Von

Von, You can't imagine how many members of TBN admire your terrific work and the sharing of the photos in the unimog restoration project you just recently completed. I know I speak for many people who wait anxiously for the next post by you. You truly are very talented and I thank you for sharing your expertise. Now all I have to do is win the big ole lottery and buy one of those puppies from you. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif Good luck on this new project and be careful.

The Case Unimogs were imported from the German manufacturer some time ago. They typically had Mercedes diesel engines. I have the import papers for mine and they were classified as tractors even though they look like a truck. They are probably the quintinesential mountain tractor.

Freightliner imports them now. Last I heard the price was around $70K. Most European armies have surplused the older Unimogs with gas engines. I've seen them go for around 4K but they don't have the features of the Case imports. Some of the Case's had a 3 range, 20 speed transmission with a 40+ mph high gear and an unbelievable creeper gear; front, mid and rear PTOs (mid usually drove the hydraulic pump); and front and rear hydraulic remotes.

The number of shift levers is mind-boggling.

Looks like I repeated some of Von's post. My apologies. Von, FWIW, I have an original owner's and shop manual.

I updated my web site about the two CASE unimogs that I got. I need to sell one to help pay for the restoration of the other! Check out the photos at:
