Finding a Gas line

I didn't see the thread before you dug ... but if the line is still exposed where the hole is at and you haven't fixed the hole ... make sure the gas is off (I'm sure you already did that) and send a fish-tape through the line,

Then rent or borrow a "valve locator" used by irrigation people (or hire an irrigation guy) and locate the line that way.

It is easier then fixing multiple breaks in the line.

When back filling the ditch, bury a penny about 4 inches deep every couple feet and the line can be found later with a metal detector. Pennies are cheap and you should be able to afford them with free gas.

Well the Gas line has been found and broken....
All is now open and exposed and a new line is being replaced and rerouted, all of the lines Gas Water Electric is all rerouted and covered up. All of this work just to build a water fall and a small Koi pond.

a utility gas line or something a private owner buried?

if its a real utility gas line, it will have a tracer wire which make them easy to locate.

this is what is in the back yard now after finding and moving the gas line

Don't do what I just did. Thought I knew where the propane line was buried. I was using the FEL and returned from dumping a load and the wife pointed to a copper line on the ground and asked what is that. Luckily I had just flattened it and it wasn't broken. However required a trip to the local hardware store for repair parts. :ashamed:

That is only 1/2 of the pond there is a 40 ft river and 3 water falls there also I will try to get a better picture and the gas line would have been under the pond :(
