I am just wrapping up building a house and noticed the other day that a pallet containing various pieces (gauge wheels, tines, etc) for my Harley Rake was just gone. The rake is there - just the pieces are gone. Giving the proximity to a dirt pile just off to the side and its proximity to my now installed septic system, I have to wonder if my septic contractor inadvertantly buried the whole thiing with a backfilling operation given that the dirt pile is gone.

Does anyone have ANY ideas for locating this stuff? Likely in the $400 range to replace this stuff.

This sounds like a case of $200 will get you $400. As in go buy a $200 metal detector to search around. Either that or find a friend who has one.

To bad your not in MO...I have a brand new one used only once to find a pocket knife.

Since the soil will still be soft, maybe a long metal rod used as a probe and a hand post hole digger will help you zero in on the stuff. A metal detector may not detect deep enough.

Tool rental or pawn shop for a metal detector. If there's a metal detector store nearby ask for a referal to someone that own's one that might do a search for you for a small fee. Given the current scrap prices your stuff may have found a new home abroad. MikeD74T

Any chance the metal parts were stolen and sold as scrap. Lots of people are selling metal to scrap dealers right now..

Hiya,

Remember to look on Craigs list and other classifieds. Yes, some crooks are that dumb.

We had an idiot steal all of our irrigation pipe that was on a trailer in my back yard. Then he sold the trailer to the feed store in town that we go to all the time. I found it the same day. It turned out it was the store owners cousin that sold it to him. He called the sheriff himself and had the bone head arrested. He got 6 years with all the other outstanding charges that were on him.
People really are stupid sometimes.

Harbor freight had a cheap metal detector for 20 bucks in there before. My kid got one and had fun with it. You get what you pay for though. It's already broke and didn't work that great to begin with. He did find some buried plow parts in our fence row and a lot of old nails though.

Thanks for all the ideas guys. I found my pallet. As figured, it had been buried. I got lucky, though - it was only about a foot down. Sort of funny - it felt a bit like unwrapping presents at Christmas. Weird, I know.

I found it by digging by hand in the area I loosely remembered it being - i got lucky. It took awhile, no doubt, but the soil was still pretty loose.
