Glad you didn't lose your life Gman!
Its not that big a boat, and I float....Hard to feel smart when you are soaking wet, though! And everyone who saw me.

Years ago I tripped on a dock with a 3.5hp outboard (30 lbs) in my hand and fell in. Wasn’t going to drop it! Shot down to the bottom, bent my legs, shot myself back up and put the outboard on the dock. 4th of July weekend, no one saw it.

Boat ramps can be the funniest places on holidays like the 4th of July weekend. Sorry I missed it. :D

Don't listen to Wagtail guys. He's not even a real Aussie! Just a Hoser from Alberta, so take off, eh?😜. (Probably never even met Crocodile Dundee.)

Oh my... you need to update your file on me Mate.

Born in North York (TO), Ontario. Left home at just 17yo to join the RCN. 21 years in that mob. Transferred to the RAN in '96 (full citizenship 2 months later). Retired at the end of 2012 (although I'm still in the Reserve).

Technically, I didn't emigrate to Aus... I was brought here by the Aussie Gov. (They paid for the entire move & visa)

I was hooking my boat to the mooring last summer (Boston Harbor) and fell off it. Lost my glasses, cell phone, and wallet. Fortunately did not lose my car key.

Two days later the wallet showed up in our mailbox, soaking wet, with all the cards in it. No note. Now before I go out to hook it up I empty my pockets. And got an easier shackle....

My HS German teacher had a Bavarian accent, and I was stationed in Bavaria. When we went to Berlin, I told the waiter I was translating for the group. Oh you are from Bavaria? I will speak slowly. [Most Northern Germans think Bavarians are a little slow.]

Yep... when I was trying my German in Hamburg the person said I sound like a Kindergarten child fresh off the mountain... then I said I had learned German from small children near Salzburg and he said that explains it...

The more sophisticated Germans are somewhat embarrassed by their Hillbilly cousins... there words not mine.

I did loose my house keys while swimming one day at Fuschl am See... really thought what are the chances but I went back at night with a flashlight and found them in the sand...

There are usually advantages to be had, letting people continue to think they are smarter than you

Worked for a company in NH that had a plant in KY. They specifically warned me “They like to play the ‘Ole Boy’ with us Yankees.”

German joke: “What is the difference between a Bavarian and a roll of film? A roll of film can be developed.”

I never pass up a mud flap from an 18 wheeler along the roadside...

Last year I was working with a team in Germany and got to meet them in person a few times. Their written English was impeccable and indistinguishable from a native US English speaker/writer. Their spoken English was excellent, and if not for the German accent, it would be difficult to tell they were not native speakers.

I read an English news website that covers a good number of non English speaking countries in the EU including Germany. Right before one of the visits by the German team, the "paper" had an article about Swabians. The team had a couple Swabians and out of the blue one day they started talking about the difference between Swabia and the rest of Germany. I mentioned the article, some of the jokes and Swabian characteristics, and they started laughing and talking to each other in German/Swabian and laughed some more. They agreed with the article which I thought was interesting. Apparently the Swabians are viewed as the Scottish Germans because they are cheap, like to save money, and their speech is almost unintelligible to other German speakers. :confused3::laughing::laughing::laughing:

Later,
Dan

My best 18 wheeler find was a leaf spring spacer block. A solid chunk of steel brick size/shape with a 5/8" hole thru the center. Makes a great portable anvil. :)
