Anyone know what kind of blades I could use on the PT 425 finish mower 60"? 3 blades total Any cross references for second and third set of blades while sharpening old ones? Any help would be helpful.

I don't know, but I'll be eagerly watching for an answer. It would be nice to find some locally available alternatives.

I use blades from Mow Products. Actually all you need to know is the length (20 3/4") and the required center hole (7/16"). Then you can shop for blades. I use the .240 thick blades, which are thicker than PT's blades and heavier. They last much longer in our sandy soil than the thinner ones. The sand wears down the upswept, trailing edge very quickly. Go to this site: Mow Products Jackobson blades and order the blades on the left side. I've been using them for the past three years. They work very well.

I bought an extra set of blades from PT when I purchased the tractor. I left the originals on without ever sharpening them for 3 summers and was still happy with the cut. I finally changed them out towards the end of the 3rd year. While the cut was nicer with the sharp blades, the old blades were still acceptable.

Moss, you have to have the softest, wimpiest grass ever grown. I have never had a blade last that long, even blades used only on a walk behind mower in town on lush turf grass wore down. Now at the camp, we totally use up three sets a year. A set will last about two to three weeks before needing to be sharpened. At least it is easy to pop the deck up and swap a set whenever needed. To change blades on our ZTR, I use the PT and forks to lift it. The Befco flail mower I use in the bigger areas only gets sharpened once a year because it's such a bear to lift with the three point and crawl under and sharpen 72 little individual blades. My little 4" grinder starts to get really heavy after 3 or 4 blades so I have to stop and pump some more blood into my arm. I have never successfully sharpened our Bush Hog SQ84 blades. They're too hard to sharpen with the small hand grinder, and the blade bolts are too firmly attached to get them off. Suprisingly, it still cuts pretty well.

On the subject of sharpening bush hog blades, There is a sliding metal door on my bush hog that lets me have access to the 1 1/2 in nuts that hold the blades on, I use an impact wrench. Once off, I use an 8 in bench grinder to sharpen. Works good for me.

Rick,

Thanks for the link. I'd been planning to do the research, but you've saved me the trouble! /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Oh, I don't know. The grass is just normal stuff. Here's a link to a picture of the lawn and what lies underneath it. Pretty good soil, pretty thick lawn before summer draught takes it's toll. We have about an acre, mowed about every 5 days or so.

Here's some pictures from (by the lilacs and pool cover) look to be about May of 2002.
