Finish mower center roller?

I just bought a used Bush Hog 6ft finish mower. Looking at the manual a front center roller was optional, which mine doesn't have. Is the purpose of the roller to keep the center from digging into the ground if it slopes off each side of the mower? Worth adding?

Yes, called an anti scalp roller. No need if you are on flat ground.

I just bought a new RFM. I am mowing a former AG field and definitely wanted the middle roller -helps ride over old tractor ruts, etc. if I used the RFM on the section of lawn I mow with my ZTR, I wouldn't have bought it.

Thanks for the responses. The place I'll be mowing is not completely flat so I'll likely add one.

I have a land pride 6' that was also optional and I do not have a flat spot on my property and mine mows fine without it. Yes.. I was thinking about putting one on. But so far I see no need.
