I've been trying to buy a new 7ft. finish mower to update my current model. I've looked at Woods (my preference), Befco, JD and Massey they are all at $3,400. I paid $1,800 for my current Woods 8 years ago. I've taken a look at Coronis for $2,400, but they look a little frail.
I've been told that it all has to do with the price of steel. Has steel doubled in price while I wasn't looking?

Have you looked at the KK finish mower? I have a 72"KK rear discharge Finish mower, I mow approx 33 acres a week and have done so with this mower now going on my 4th year. It was reasonablly priced from Tractor Supply and has did me great! I did change the way it picked in the back with 2 chains in the back instead of one. It also has a wabble hitch which is great if your ground is uneven like mine is. Only problem is the bushings are warn out in the 4 wheels. No fault of the mower, they have grease fittings and it gets greased weekly. It is mowing rain or shine, wet or dry conditions. I would say i ask a lot from the machine but its did great and the bushings are easily replaced so i will be good to go again. KK makes in my opinion a nice mower. . .John

Check out Farm King or Allied (Buhler). A new unit is somewhere around 2-2.5k. I have a 72" that has worn through at least one set of blades (I am second owner) without a hiccup to my knowledge. Very good build quality, heavy deck, great cut.

It's that extra foot of width that's costing you.
72" and 60" mowers are pretty common. When you get bigger then that, you tend to be in commercial territory.
Keep looking at the other brands, as the other posters wrote.

How about rebuilding your Woods? 8 years isn't particularly old for a finish mower.

Your looking at a Woods PRD mower, thats the premium high end model. If your okay with somthng lighter, and cheaper, the RD series is several hundred less money.
