I am in the market for a rfm very soon. The 2 questions i have are, #1 do the mulching blades work well on these mowers. #2 does the rear discharge disperse the clippings better than the side discharge?

Shane, Other than color there is no obvious difference in the the two side discharge mowers, Is there a price difference?

One thing that might be of concern with these particular side discharge is the narrow rear wheel location , It might lend itself to gouging the ground if going through a dip , when the rear wheels go through a dip and outside edges of the deck dig into the ground...
On the other hand a finish mower with wheels way on the outside will be a little more prone to scalping and snagging something with the caster arms. I guess it should be taken into consideration when buying for your particular application, Whether your ground is dippy or lumpy /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif which ever a box scraper can fix it. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I was looking at a woods 6' RFM I don't remember the model just that it was 6' and it was very stout compared to my 6' KingKutter RFM....

My two cents /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

kingoflawns, ( #1 do the mulching blades work well on these mowers ) Mulching blades will work if the mower is baffled, If it is all open underneath you won't get full value from them.
( #2 does the rear discharge disperse the clippings better than the side discharge? ) As long as both are tested in the same enivroment ie: dry grass not too tall, not too damp, The rear should give a little better distribution. If the grass is tall and damp you probably wouldn't get much if any better cut..

For example , My neighbor has a 5' rear discharge and he almost always mows late in the day/evening so his yard looks nasty with clumps and spalling.. I try to never mow when the dew is about rise and when using the RFM side discharge with no baffles my mowing job looked great compared...But really there are so many variables to this kind of debate...

I will tell you this my 6' side discharge came with my used tractor so thats what I use, If I was buying new I would probably get a rear discharge if for only one reason, being able to mow up close on both sides of the tractor. When mowing an appreciable size lawn time will become a factor, so if you have to turn around to make another pass the opposite direction to get close ,that takes more time than just getting closer to the other side on your last pass...

That was a little more than two cents worth /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Great comments so far. It seems that the Rear/side discharge issue is one that gets looked at first. I was leaning more towards the side type myself (just in case I ever want to be picky and pick up the grass somehow).

I haven't been able to get out and look at any other brands. I'm hoping some other pics will show up here. The pics I posted are supposedly the medium/heavy duty versions (priced around $2400 I believe). I have some brochures of the light duty versions around somewhere. I think the wheel carriages on some are thin tubular steel. A guy down the road has a Befco I'm going to look at. I hear those are well made also.

I'm guessing that the 5 and 6 foot models are most popular with the compact/mid size tractor group. I'd be interested to hear of anyone who limitation problems with a 6 footer.

Interesting the mowers you posted look like they are made at the same place. Wheel yokes/spindles are the same, some of thedesign on th green ones look just like my 99 model woods.

Can't help with the comparisions but I wish mine was a rear discharge. Only time my side discharge is nice is when I want to blow leaves around the tree trucks, I can circle the tree and pile them up.

Also remember there are different blades for the mowers. I think my woods has a high lift, medium lift and a no lift. I have the medium.

I have one of those LandPride mowers with the wind tunnel setup and it does a nice job. It came with the hi-lift blades and I bought a set of standard ones since it was so dry last year,(dusty). That wind tunnel creates a lot of lift, works good on wet grass. Also has that floating top link and it really conforms to irregular surfaces. It cuts as nice or better than my Snapper rider.

Hey,
The mowers you showed were made by Woods. The RM660 and the Frontier, made by Woods, GM1072R. Take a look at the Bushhog brand of finish mowers. Their great too.
