"Actually, I need to learn to drive a tractor before I go to the dealer! It would be hard to awe and amaze the dealer with my amazing accumulation of tractor knowledge "

Don't worry about trying to amaze him!! You're a novice...better to go in as one (but you'll know enough if he tries to screw ya!).

He'll show you the basics to drive (I'm far from being an expert, but I'd operated a Backhoe in the late 60's and a Farmall for my Dad in the early 80's so I wasn't a total novice when I bought mine). You'll have a lot to learn over the next several months on your own (with us right behind ya!!).

I assume you're thinking of a Hydro tranny? Is your wife planning on driving the machine too?

Now that's what I call planning ahead Chris! A TBN Gold Star for you /w3tcompact/icons/clever.gif

I like the New Hollands, something like a TC40D.

Woohoo! Good choice. /w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif

It would be hard to awe and amaze the dealer with my amazing accumulation of tractor knowledge, yet walk over to the tractor and ask him "how do you drive it?"

That was my situation exactly. I had read every post on TBN for over two years, even going back through the archive. I went in knowing every option I wanted and every spec imaginable. I knew more than most (all) of the dealers I talked to about specs and options. But when it came time to drive it, I felt kind of like a fool, especially driving a gear model for the first time and when I tried to get a full scoop of dirt with the loader.

But none of the dealers looked down on me for it (well maybe one JD dealer /w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif) and they were all glad to take my money. /w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif Overall it was a fun experience shopping the different colors and test driving them all.

Oh, yeah. Beautiful house too.

The roof is typical for Michigan - an asphalt/fiberglass composite shingle. In the past most houses had "three tab" shingles, but now (for a slight price premium) they add additional layers to each shingle to give the appearance of real wood. Our shingles are Tamko Natural Timber.

The siding gives the appearance of rough sawn cedar lap siding, but is actually made from cement. It comes from James Hardie, a company that I believe originated down your way. The trim pieces and corner boards are actual cedar, as Hardie doesn't make the trim material in 5/4" (~3cm) thickness. I talked to the company about that (I really wanted the exterior to be low maintenance), and the rep said they were planning to come out with 5/4 x 2, 3, 4, and 6" trim material in the future.

Yes to the HST, and I don't think my wife will even stand next to it when it's running /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif. However, after 20 years, she still suprises me, so who knows?
