( ...Folks who aren't familar with fire ants sometimes meet up with them alongside the road when they pull over for some reason or another in fire ant territory...)

I used to be one of those folks when I was living in south Georgia, courtesy of the Navy. I was laying on my side on the shoulder of a road hooking up a tow chain to pull a broken car home. The amazing thing is how all 5000 ants waited until they were in position all over me before they all stung at the same time. I didn't have a chance.

I refuse to eat anything that will kill ants. It is the only good use for grits.

My daughter and I were travelling across the southern states from San Diego on our way to her college in Savannah, Ga. We stopped off at my brother's place in the suburbs of Dallas for an ovenight, and we had left one doughnut in a tightly closed bag on the back seat of her VW bug. The next morning the trail was evident, up over the front tire thru the suspension holes and into the car. She was barefoot and didn't notice the ant trail till it was too late, we wound up going to the hospital for treatment.
Later that day I watched as one of the apartment complex's maint. guys came out to poison the hill. He had on thick rubber boots and one of those pump up sprayers, as he stuck the nozzle down into the hole and started spraying they came boiling up out of the mound, he calmly pulled the wand back and sprayed them off his boots then went at 'em again till he emptied his bottle. I now have a very healthy respect for those critters!
Glad the little guy is OK, hope he learned his lesson!

The use to sprinkle "DDT"(?not sure) on the ant mounds.. the ant's would then carry into there mounds.. it's a banned pesticide?

I agreeeeee fire ants are most sertinly dasterdly lil buggers.... Funny, I have used the grits trick and it doesn't even take instant. Just a 99cent bag. O and grits are better than that mush called creme of wheat... yukkkk. What wast of a good loaf of bread..theres cheeses grits, tomato grits, grits n fried eggs and grits and scrambles eggs..... hm it think I'l et some for a snak in bit with butter and salt....

Grits just one more use for corn........ hmmmm... sorry can yu tell i'm hungry....?

I'll leave them alone if they leave us alone... and some ant mounds go several feet deep and can be very hard to kill. I's seen them 2ft high here in bamma as a young'n. used to get kicks out of poking them with stick and then tossing in the deffincle bug or to....

my lil one has been bit on occasion by one or 2 at a time and has learned they bit hard. But he still like to run over the small 6 or 10 in high mounds on his new 4 wheeler. Wonder how long it will take before he slings one up on himself and finds out the hard way they can still get you... I'll bet he finds out buy this fall.... /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Well thats probably beacuse no one in the whole state of ohio knows how to make them properly. /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif
Store bought grits do not count, and instant grits are not fit for ant killing much less for human consumption.
If you are ever down this way let me know and I will provide an education for you on the subject /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
When made properly they are very good.

Mike,

I've got to agree with you on this one! /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

A good friend of mine from Atlanta kept telling me how great grits were. Finally, we were visiting them down there, and he took me to the "best restaurant" for grits in the area. I agreed to give 'em a try, if for no other reason than to quiet him down. I even let him order them for me (just buttered and salt) so that they would be exactly the way he wanted them to be when I tried them.

I tried them. /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

I think I enjoyed library paste as a kid more than I did those things. /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

Then my friend starts telling me all the different ways I have to try them so that I can find the style that I liked.

I assured him that there was not going to be ANY style that I liked. /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif
