One thing that's very important is having an extinguisher big enough to put the fire out totally.

Just saying...

How big is the fire? How big does it take to put out a 100ac field?

I didn't think it was necessary to explain it to anybody, but apparently I was wrong. Please allow me to reiterate what I stated.

I was simply trying to remind people that having an extinguisher that is too small to put out the initial fire is the same as having no extinguisher at all and hopefully some would rethink their needs rather than just buying too small of a one because it fits on the machine better.

You would need to have something larger than those little kitchen fire stoppers. THey squirt about 2 seconds and they are empty. I would think for a fuel fire on your tractor you would need a 15 lb. ABC rated dry powder or CO2 fire extinguisher.

the key is using it fast. fires start small and get big. catch it small and prevent it from growing and any size extinguisher will work. the biggest part of stopping a fire is preventing it. remember to check for debri on manifolds and mufflers, and check for chaffed wires. and when you see 'new' smoke.. investigate before it becomes 'new' fire.

a good spark arrestor muffler vs a straight pipe is a good choice too.

I have several tractor ,house porch [near grill] garage etc .All have age on them and gauges say they are bad.Going to try one soon,to see if they still do work when the gauge is in the red.next one i puchase will be the rechargable kind

I had one where the gauge said it was bad, so for giggles I tried it and I got a cloud of chemical, so the cheap gauge may have gone bad.

I have a hunch that fire extinguishers for the most part have become like electronics in that it's cheaper to throw the bad one away instead of recharging it.

That is the trouble with dry powder extinguishers, they have a finite life and need to be serviced on regular intervals. I am not sure how well they would even work on a tractor as the constant pounding and vibration may settle the powder to much, but maybe not. One would need to consult a professional servicing company for the answer to that.
We cant just stick them on a tractor for 10 years and expect them to work when we need them. With a CO2 type if the guage shows pressure it will work and can be used multiple times if you dont discharge it completely. NO matter the size of the dry powder type it is a one shot deal and has to be discarded or recharged after use.

can't possibly beat them around any more than in a dump truck. I've ridden shotgun in some of our trucks out to a job and round trips from the mine. My tractor rides a WHOLE LOT smoother.. and DOT says those trucks gotta have them...

the one time I ever used a fire extinguisher at work was when our semi pulled in and it's power wire tot he trailer got pinched by the pogo stick and caught on fire. I was outside and snatched the door open.. grabbed the extinguisher and the hot wire fell on the hydraulics plastic tank and was melting it.. I calle dout to the driver who had just got out to get a bolt cutter to snip the wire.
