True enough. Which is why I carry huge deductibles in on house/farm/cars, a couple million umbrella for 'lawyer liability', and put the savings in the bank so I'm self insured for a lot of small things. I consider a 10 year old tractor or car a reasonably small thing, and would simply replace them out of savings.

That said, my aim is too mitigate as many small things as I can. Have 6 fire extinguishers in the house, one in both vehicles, a 5lb one on the mini-ex (with all that hydraulic everything, if one gets started 5lbs might not do it :D ), 2 in the shop, one in the shed where I park my truck and mini-ex, one at the sawmill shed and one at the fuel shed......and the one on the tractor. I think I counted 15 there spread out all over the place.

One near the kitchen is one of those haylon gas type.....no mess to clean up from the extinguisher, assuming you get a fire out.

One on the steps going down to the basement, just off the living room. Also a set of Chimfex wood stove extinguishers in case of a flue fire.

Two in the basement (1/2 basement, small area) plus Chimfex because we have a wood stove there too:

One in the garage just outside the kitchen door:

One in the 'auxiliary kitchen'/meat prep room off the back of the garage + Chimfex for the wood cook stove:

( yes, the paper towels are not normally stored on top the stove during use.....I know SOMEBODY will point it out..... :D)

One in the car in the garage:

All of these photos, and many more, are stored in a file called "Insurance Photos" stored on the cloud should they ever be needed.

I do understand your insurance philosophy, but after my $240,000 fire I figured I could pay $1000 or $2000 deductible homeowner premiums (with replacement value coverage) for as long as 100 years, and might still be ahead of the game.
I was 47 then, and am closing in on 80 now.

Understand. By high deductible, I mean the most I'd be out on a house/shop fire would be 5,000. Full replacement above that....no depreciation as long as I do replace it....which I would. My plan for a major fire is first to buy an nice lawn chair and umbrella, because I won't be lifting a finger on this go round but it will get rebuilt to the exact same it is now. My insurance company ain't gonna be happy.....ahahaaaaa

My insurance company (USAA) got off to a bad start.
They hired a contractor who was a butcher/slob.
I told the USAA adjuster that I would not let that contractor do any more work.

The big boss came out and convinced me to give them another try with a different foreman.
The difference was like between night and day.
The foreman was fantastic, and complied with my every wish.

I was VERY satisfied with the job!
I know the cost was well above what was originally estimated, and in my opinion they might have done better if they had just torn down the house, saved the full basement, and started over.
The job took 11 months, but they also paid (loss of use) for me to rent a condo.

The Element fire extinguishers posted earlier are significantly smaller and disperse for a longer time than all the ones shown so far. Their size makes it much easier to mount or store.
