Sedgewood,
if you had no damage to you that half a win,now the pt that is an other story. that looks like a trip to pt may be in order?was it running when you used the fire extinguisher or did you get it shut down?
maybe we all will learn from this, you are lucky the hyd. oil didn't take fire. this is what happens a lot.i think a fire extinguisher is going on this one if i ever get it running again.

Sedgewood,
I can't tell you how sorry I am to have this happen to you. I would not wish this on anyone.
Did you have the extinguisher at hand or did you have to run and get one, which caused more time for damage?
As you get into this we all will be interested to find out what the cause was and the corrective action.

No it wasn't running when I used the extinguisher. The first thing I did was shut it down, then lift the hood to see where all the smoke was coming from, then run for the house (luckily only 500 feet away) for an extinguisher. No hydraulic or fuel lines burst.

I definitely think a trip to PT is in order here. I'll be talking to the insurance company and Terry today to start to get a handle on things. My first guess is $3-5,000 damage plus trucking to PT and back - another $2,000 or so. That assumes the engine, hydraulic pumps, wheel motors, etc are ok. All the wiring and, I think, all the hydraulic hoses in the engine compartment are toast as are a few other minor things.

Thanks for all the kind words everyone,
Sedgewood

It's good thing you caught it in time. I sure hope your insurance can cover it, otherwise that's a big bill to swallow. Do you have any idea what started it? Could it be all the chaff build up that Charlie was talking about last year?

/ FIRE! In the engine room! #10
I am truly sorry for your fire /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif. It does look pretty extensive. Some of your seals could be damaged by the chemicals in the extinquisher. Please let us know if you find out how it started.
I dont want to make the same mistake if I ever get a Power-trac. (That will be the CFO's decision not mine). Robert

I suspect that is one thing we can confidently rule out. That buildup, first, probably wasn't even there, because John mounted a pre-cooler screen. The buildup is in the air-oil heat exchanger air passages, which would never get hotter than the oil temperature. The cooler is within a shroud, high on the engine. John's fire was low.

I had a '68 Corvette whose engine caught on fire. In addition to the more obvious things that needed checked, e.g., wiring, vacuum lines, etc., the dealer also had to check various metal things like the heads to make sure the heat of the fire did not warp them. Even though my engine fire was brief, no more than 5 - 10 minutes, the car ended up being scrapped. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

As a professional fire fighter I can tell you that most engine fires engin fires result in a total loss of the car/truck. Luck the power trac is made of heavy steel!

Good luck!

Well, at least I got my new cushy Northern Tools seat installed last week before the fire. And yesterday my new mirrors came in from J C Whitney. /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Wow - have not been on for a while - opened up to this - glad your ok - what on earth do you think caused this
what were you doing when it happened? - was it running
a long time - I just got done over the weekend grading
my brother in laws yard for the home they bought

plus removing a 30ft dumpster full of debris - very hard work
it performed well - only the operator held it back so it probably took twice as long - would never even have thought
about a fire - now I am going to buy a fire estinguisher and
make sure it is covered on my insurance

I doubt Sedgewood's experience means the PT1845 is prone to fire, but -- early yesterday morning I faxed an insurance agent to make sure it's added to my policy if it needs to be separately scheduled. Sure glad to hear Sedgewood already had coverage in place. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif
