We are dry and live in the big woods of the northland. Forest fires broke out today, with high winds and low humidity. Dark as dusk, at mid afternoon. Smells of acrid pine smoke. Light ash filters out of the sky. We are in the evacuation zone.

Hope they get it contained soon. :) This is one of our biggest fears, forest fires. We are at the end of a dead end road so even a bit more of a worry. Thanks for the pics and keep us posted. Good wake up call to give some thought again if we have the same situation in our area.

Not good BP. Hope you don't have any problems. Do you have a good cleared perimeter around your buildings?

It's very dry here too. March and April warmest on record and May is following the same trend. Unusual to see dusty lanes in mid-May but I have some.
Dave.

This is a fear that most people that live in rural areas have. I usually tell my friends to pack important documents, pictures, and other irreplaceable items and store in a root cellar or somewhere a wildfire cannot destroy them. I'm a Volunteer Fireman but it takes even a Brush Truck a half hour plus to get from the station to where I live. It appears that we will be getting a Brush Truck assigned shortly to where to I live at least for the Wildfire Season.

Best of luck to you and your family!!
Jim

UPDATE AT 6:04 P.M: The U.S. Forest Service says the wildfire in Crawford County is now more than 3,000 acres and is not contained. A second shelter has been set up at the Resurrection Life Center in Crawford County. If you live in Roscommon County you need to go to the St. Helen Richfield Township Hall. Viewers tell 7 & 4 News ash is falling in areas surrounding the fire location.

UPDATE AT 8:32 P.M: We're told the wildfire has now spread to more than 5,000 acres. Witnesses say more than 20 homes have been destroyed.

This break out is about 4 miles from our place. For now, we are fine. Yes, we have clear areas around the house. The wind has died down at dusk, which would slow "jumping". Jumping could absolutely get us.

After seeing how a area around a fellow TBN members home burned. I have a lot more understanding of how these fires feed on themselves.
Be careful and evacuate sooner than later.

Following a very calm and cold night, the day dawns with progress made, but the fire is still not contained, let alone put out. The forest service predicts that may take weeks.

The winds will pick up and the day will be very hot, near 80 degrees. Not helpful. 7000 acres already burned, 20 homes destroyed.

The winds have shifted, taking the smoke and ash away from our home and likely putting our place in a much better position. All resources have been committed to battle this massive fire. We continue to pray for the safety of the fire fighters.
