Fire In The North Woods - pix

Sorry to hear about your fires. I'm surprised it's so dry up north. Here in southern Ohio, it's been a very wet May, we've had some amount of rain on 14 out of the last 30 days.

Ken, yes, that is always the way it is. If an area is exceptional wet, as much of the Ohio Valley has been, then somebody is likely to be very, very dry. This is often within just a hundred miles.

The winter snows and spring rains followed a pattern. They have consistently tracked south of us. The pattern will have to change. If not, we are in for a dangerous summer.

Wishing you all the best up there. Long ago we lived in Calif., where the fires are a constant danger, and I know first hand that it's no fun waking up to the smell of smoke in the air.

Here in NC, we've just broken a 2 month drought with several days of nice rain. Maybe the weather pattern is unsettled enough to bring some moisture your way.

Stay safe.

I hope they get it contained. Around us are trees also, though we are close to a well settled area, all around here there are pine trees. We have cleared quite a few in our yard but a fire would still get us.

We were tinder dry here also, but lucked out. A good rain one day and night before last 2 gulley washers. But to show how dry it was there are hardly any puddles around. It's 94 today with heat index of 97 so it will dry us out again really quick.

I hope you folks are ok, my thoughts go with you.

It's hot way to early this year. We had almost 3 months last summer of near 100 degree days and I fear worse this summer. Maybe its global climate change, who knows why, but something is happening.

This break out is about 4 miles from our place. For now, we are fine. Yes, we have clear areas around the house. The wind has died down at dusk, which would slow "jumping".* Jumping could absolutely get us.
*Sure hope that don't happen.

That's what I was thinking too, the weather pattern is a continuation of last winter. Chuck52 can't mow his lawn in VA and we are missing several inches of rain here. This afternoon, we did get a good soaking rain finally. No more than an inch if that though.
Dave.

Thanks to everyone for their thoughts and prayers. This was a really bad one. Yet, not one serious injury or loss of life. Amazing.

The Forestry Service says they now have it surrounded. 7700 acres, 7 miles long and almost 2 miles wide. They won't call it "safe" for weeks and weeks.

Thanks again everyone. This one was and it was much, much too close. Washing fly ash off everything today.

Tragedy is that on a day when our forests are tinder dry AND we had 35 mile an hour winds, some guy calls in for burn permit. NUTS!!!

Bigger farce is that some clerk at the court house gave him one!!! Heads need to roll on that. Just ask the weary fire fighters who have worked round the clock for two days now and are exhausted, or the 12-20 folks who have lost their homes and all their belongings.:mad:

BP,

It is extremely dry up here in the UP of Michigan also, but it has been hot and dead calm, so if we have a fire, it shouldn't be too bad. Still I wish it would rain since I planted 125 trees two weeks ago. It doesn't look like rain here for the forseeable future, but you might get some rain on Friday, down there.
