Don't forget the third type:

3. Heat Sensing - this type measures the temperature and will alarm if it is over a certain temperature. The ones I've installed are set to go off at temps > 165. These types are good for dusty environments (workshops, barns) and places where products of combustion are expected (kitchens, garages). They will not generate false alarms in these areas.

A heat detector is not considered a smoke detector, by the time the heat detection activates, u be dead! Only smoke detection should be installed in living and sleeping areas as per NFPA codes.

Heat detection is perfect for property loss protection but NOT for life safety.

Just wanted to let the other TBN folks understand the difference.
