Firearm Transport Question

   / Firearm Transport Question #71
I can understand the NVA description as it was "how do I", not "should I".

As to "needing to" that is for each of to decide and it appears all responding have passed that decision point and I am not inclined to elaborate on mine or call others into question.

This thread did not start with a question; it was titled: 'Re: Firearm Transport Question'
The OP then posed whether he should lie or go around Maryland. Various opinions were posted and mine was one of them. Since I was one of those responding, not ALL have passed 'that decision point'. You won't elaborate on yours and don't choose to call other's into question, however I do, and just like one's right to carry, etc. I too can ask for discussion about the seemingly endless desire to go everywhere packing. My original suggestion was to say if left at home there would be no need to avoid certain states or lie to police, etc. Just one more alternative to the transport dilemma.

Peace.

Then by all means start a thread, it might be interesting. I know several members who compete and one is doing so right now, been through a LOT of states in the last few weeks. There are a variety of reasons many of us feel the need or desire to be armed at all times.

You keep saying you 'value' my opinion, but your most recent, NVA statement clearly indicates you don't.
I'm not and wasn't trying to 'start something' as you put it. I was offering a different point of view, which you, and many others don't want to hear in most threads of this nature. Why is it necessary to carry any weapon wherever you go? You all discuss keeping your mouths shut about whether you even have a weapon with you if stopped by LE. What value is added by carrying a weapon in the first place? Are you so afraid that someone else is going to whip out a weapon and shoot you that you need to feel 'safe' by beating them to the first shot? If so, a little less paranoia might be a value added concept.

Appreciate your opinion, not value. It's different.

There was no discussion about whether or not I was taking a gun, or why I was taking a gun for that matter.

Bottom line is that it was a respectful conversation about differing state laws on weapon transport. There was no need to insert your agenda into it.

Who cares if your carrying or not the criminals are and I personally could care less if you want me to carry in your state or not I'll do as I please and you can't stop me or them , so why waste time debating it ? if i have to pull a weapon to defend myself I will if not I won't tell me if you know which truck I'm driving down the road ...you can't and so be it ......

Collected from newspapers around the country:

Armed Citizen

Bruce

These anecdotes are crap. I could just as easily post a list of little kids who have been killed with daddy's gun or teenagers who blew their brains out with dad's gun or wives and girlfriends who were shot in the heat of an argument.

Biased and selected anecdotal reports from either side are not useful data.

Yep, anecdotal reports are not useful data if they are contrary to the position you've already decided on.

The Firearm Owners Protection Act (FOPA) provision for protection of a person legally transporting firearms (unloaded, in a locked container, inaccessible to passenger compartment) through such states that do not otherwise allow such was incorporated into US Code Title 18 Section 926A.

U.S. Code

It would be a good idea to print this out and carry it with you just in case.

It goes without saying that you should NEVER EVER volunteer any information to a police officer during a traffic stop or agree to allow a search of your vehicle. The following link provides a useful guideline for exercise of your rights.

CHLPP is a legal services membership organization for concealed handgun licence/permit holders.

Federal law is what applies here, and I do what John does.....carry a copy in case you have to educate a cop along the way.

Specifically, the law says:

Notwithstanding any other provision of any law or any rule or regulation of a State or any political subdivision thereof, any person who is not otherwise prohibited by this chapter from transporting, shipping, or receiving a firearm shall be entitled to transport a firearm for any lawful purpose from any place where he may lawfully possess and carry such firearm to any other place where he may lawfully possess and carry such firearm if, during such transportation the firearm is unloaded, and neither the firearm nor any ammunition being transported is readily accessible or is directly accessible from the passenger compartment of such transporting vehicle: Provided, That in the case of a vehicle without a compartment separate from the driver痴 compartment the firearm or ammunition shall be contained in a locked container other than the glove compartment or console.
