Fireplace/Wood Stove Combustion Air

Egon,

We have taken the simple path with a 6 inch diameter pipe. Once the house is finished we will put on a 90 degree piece. I like the idea of a flapper. Somehow a flapper integrated with a rodent screen.

We decide to skip the second stove at least for now. We keep returning to this issue. The shingles go on the house this week so we would like to get the through the roof part of the chiminey installed prior to the shingles. We where thinking of just adding the through the roof part of the chiminey for future use but we decided to not even do that at this time.

So our one air supply certainly will work for one stove.

We are going to get a CO detector. I did not know that they had display to give me the PPM. I'll get one of those.

yes they have them with % displays, (I have one like PR's, made by NIGHTHAWK) one thing though is many of them are only good for X number of years as the sensor warms/burns out and does not last for ever. same with many smoke detectors, they have a limited life span... I think MINE is heading twards the end of it's life, as last year it would not read as accurately as it did when NEW, as when I run my gas stove, you would SEE it rise (the co level went up to like 6%) when cooking a big meal. (like turky day, and when making smaller regular meal it would go to 3~4%) all OK in the range. anyhow this past year I didn't notice it moving up anymore... not sure if i just didn't COOK enough or that it's going south?

And what else could you 'calibrate' the CO detector against (short of the emergency 911 call) ?

Without a calibration process, what good would they be?

What is to say they are calibrated when new?

My smoke detector (old one) still goes off if I let too many off-gases out of the wood burner, so I think it is still working. But beyond that, I am not sure the others in the house would still work in a real fire. The test lights and test buttons still work, but as to sensitivity, not sure.

As to air vents/pipes coming in the house, it will soon be time for the asian beetles to come in that way too. /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif
