We try to make a little money from the farm and try not to spend money to make money. Our son enjoys splitting and stacking firewood for our customers to come buy. He ends up with a little pocket change every time someone buys. He doesnt get paid till someone buys. Teaches him he has to work to get paid. Also a little patience.

Do your kids help?

When my son still lived at home - he certainly did help with all our chores/projects. The ONLY thing I WOULD NOT let him do - fall our big Ponderosa pine. What we would harvest for firewood would run 30" to 38" on the butt. Because I used an enormous Stihl and 36" bar - I would fall them myself. Honestly - at my age -76 - I'm glad I don't burn firewood anymore and have to deal with the "monsters". Now - I will occasionally sell off the largest pines for lumber.

I think it is great... we all had jobs as kids and earned money... mine was every Saturday mowing neighbors lawns for .25 cents a lawn with my push mower... summer had chores staining fences, etc...

By 12 I was paying into Social Security washing and cleaning cars for a Car Dealer... paid $50 a week...

When my sons were that age, they came out to work w/ me (doing construction at the time). They learned a skill and patience. They also got paid after I did. As they grew older, they were able to do more and more. Of course, making more money. They would always tell mom: "I don't know how dad does it...he just keeps going and going...we can't keep up". Now they sure can do more than me!

Nice video!

Our kids would help when needed, but for the most part, their main jobs were school, homework, and sports. They didn't have much free-time at all. I did a time study on them and between school, homework, jobs, and sports, they were putting in about 90 hours per week, each. Didn't leave time for many chores. They did have to take care of their pets, though.

Wish I was closer; Mesquite is not so plentiful here, and if I had a wheelbarrow full, I would use it in my smoker!
