Firewood Storage

   / Firewood Storage #42
As I sit here in front of the fire, I'm thinking about all the wood I've been cutting lately.

I suddenly have been given access to more oak firewood than I can use for the next 10 years. My neighbor is a home builder and is doing a development in a wooded area. The trees that were cleared for the road were stacked in log lengths but the sawmills are not interested. And each home site needs to be cleared before construction begins. Also there is standing dead that the real estate company wants removed to help sell the lots.

I have been cutting the logs to blocks, then splitting and hauling home. In about two more weeks I will have at least three seasons of wood. Then I would like to do something with the rest before the opportunity is lost.

What is the best way to store firewood for several years?

Under cover, on dry ground, with good air circulation around. Takes less space if stacked.

You can take a look in the 'Attachments' forum under 'Forks on a FEL, economy' and take a look how the forks came about. Source would be my shop and a longtime buddy with access to worn forktruck forks. The picture in this thread is the last one posted in May after the spring logging crisis was over. As far as lifting goes: I'm pretty much limited by hydraulics and steering. My rear tires are filled and the 3pt carries a 380 pound counter weight (which must be in a thread somewhere). The machine can lift and maneuver at rated capacity however the load center is approx 18" further out from the FEL pins so I figure around 600#. I'm still waiting for the ground to freeze up so I can move the rest of the wood near the house. There was so much rain before the snow, the ground is just mush. SteveV

And my counterweight picture would be located here: <A target="_blank" HREF=http://www.tractorbynet.com/cgi-bin/compact/showthreaded.pl?Cat=&Board=jdown&Number=39805&Search=true&Forum=All_Forums&Words=SteveV&Match=Username&Searchpage=4&Limit=25&Old=allposts&Main=39705>Counterweight, concrete</A> SteveV
