Firewood - Wood Splitter - Not Tractor Attached - Whats best?

Lowe's is having a 10% off sale yesterday and today if you have a Lowe's card.

I picked up a Fiskar axe and hatchet, and a sharpener, and a DH 22-ton splitter.

Actually the splitter is still there in a huge crate. Either they will assemble it or I will go pick it up in the crate with my trailer and put it together myself (I think I'd rather build it, so I know how it goes together...).

Sometimes that is harder than it sounds... Yesterday my GF & I demo'd a large wooden play structure at one of my rentals down to individual boards, loaded it all into my little truck and flat bed trailer, along with the assembled splitter, raced home and showered because we were offered a couple "lawn" tickets to Jimmy Buffet, drove like mad to find our friends, and then it proceeded to thunderstorm, and pouring rain for the entire show, drove home almost naked due to soaked clothes, and hit the rack after midnight. Today we are going to Kings Dominion with her son... My body is trashed, or soon will be...

And he trailer/truck still needs to be unloaded!

Good deal, I know you will like that splitter. I need to put mine to work if the heat wave ever gives us a break....

I would suggest assembling yourself if possible, then you can trust the work. If Lowes assembles it, make sure to check that the wheels turn freely before towing -- I read a couple reviews of various Lowes-assembled splitters where the bearing castle nut was tightened too far and the wheels locked up when they got hot. The assemblers probably don't understand the purpose of the castle nut and pin, and crank it down like it's any old nut.

It was easy/fun to put the splitter together. Only hassle was figuring out how to take the crate apart to get the components loose. Quite a few hidden lags and nuts/bolts.

Thanks for posting that, we were considering getting a splitter this weekend!

What store/ZIP were you shopping at in case our local doesn't want to do the 10% of w/card? Sometimes you can call the other store and get the local to match the deal.
