First airline horror story

It's was my experience back when I was traveling as soon as one thing happened out of the ordinary it was just down hill from there.

...never had anything like this happen....

2 - Other than the plane going down, you have a worse story to make me feel better?:D
Sounds like almost every flight I have ever been on... got so bad, took 3 days to get back from Canada that I've yet to fly again. (four years)

Airline don't give a crap about passengers...

We'll see what happens in Jan. when I get back on a plane to fly to Oregon to ski... Seriously NOT looking forward to the trip because of the flight.

Mace - what in the world caused you to fly into the Clinton Cr asbestos mine? I made several road trips from Anchorage to Dawson and up Bonanza Cr - last one was '72. We were never alone on that dirt road until we would get past the turnoff to the mine. Nothing like sharing a dirt road with a semi truck loaded with asbestos coming at you from the opposite direction. And they were all H*ll bent for election.

Had to be in Scottsdale for a meeting this past Monday 3PM their time. Plan was to come back Weds.

It was requested I book the flight to be there Monday by 12 noon to have time to make the meeting (no possible issues there lol).

Left my house at 0415 as I had to fly out of Charlotte (not my first choice as Greensboro is much closer). I was on the plane at 0730 looking good.

At 0830, they turn the planes power off, turned it back on, then we had to get off. They tell us they're bringing in another plane.

We wait until about 11 (plane comes up from Atlanta), they then tell us that the new plane now has mechanical issues as well, but our original plane is fixed.

They move everyone down 20 gates where they moved the original plane, but as I'm there talking to the one attendant, find out that the origial plane was back at our same gate (LOL at least I didn't have to make the walk because I was talking to the attendant).

Turns out the airline would have to put me up in Salt Lake city overnight and I'd be in Phoenix next morning at 10:00. I tell them that is unacceptable as I'm already missing two meetings that day, and that my next meeting was Tuesday morning at 8AM and I couldn't miss those as well.

OK, they can fly me to Detroit, then I can be in Phoenix at 23:00

I finally hit the hotel room at 23:45.

Spent basically 19 hours Monday between 3 airports running 11 hours behind missing 2 meetings.

On the way back home last night, I was the last person boarding the plane in Dallas, but at least they held up the plane for my luggage. I fly perhaps 3 to 4 times a year for work, never had anything like this happen.

2 questions -

1 - From people with more airline travel experience, can I milk this horror story for a free flight for my one boy who has never flown?

2 - Other than the plane going down, you have a worse story to make me feel better?:D

As a road warrior. to your answer to #1, no.

For #2, that is nothing.

Flaying home from San Diego to Austin on a Friday afternoon. Connecting in Salt Lake.

Thunderstorm in Salt Lake.

We circle and end up diverting to Las Vegas for fuel.

Get into Salt Lake at 9 pm. The only flight to get out on time was my connecting flight to Austin at 8 pm.

They reroute me from Salt Lake to JFK. JFK to Atlanta. Atlanta to Austin.

I get home Sat at 2 pm.

The "funny" thing is looking at all of the other options--staying Salt Lake over night, booking on another airline, that was the quickest way home.

I fly about once a month for work (less now, thankfully). I try to avoid O'Hare like the plague!! My step son says "O'Hare - where travel itineraries go to die!" LOL!!

I have a client now in downtown Chicago so I've been flying to and from O'Hare for the last 8 months or so. It actually takes me longer to take the train into downtown than it does to fly from my home airport to O'Hare.

Many years ago I was doing a job in Kansas City and was scheduled to fly home through O'Hare. I managed to finish early at the client site and actually took the 0630 flight from KC to O'Hare instead of an afternoon flight. I was trying to make it home in time for my daughter's school concert. Got to O'Hare around 7:30 and got on standby for the next flight home. No luck, so tried for the next flight. Was the last person to board that flight and was buckled in and ready to go with the flight attendant came down the aisle and took me and the second to last person to board off the flight for "weight and balance". OK - I'm still booked on a 3:30 flight which will get me home.... until it was cancelled!! The best they would do was book be on the 3:30 the NEXT DAY. I ended up renting a car, driving it to the home airport and picking up my truck and driving home. Made it home past midnight. Took me 18 hours to get home. Would have only taken me 9 hours to drive directly from KC home.

Sweetie and I flew home yesterday from vacation. Noticed on both fights that the normal "wait until the row in front of you exits" protocol was gone! People coming up from the rear, squeezing through, etc. I could kind of understand it when getting to ATL as all sorts of people had connections. But not many people make a connection at our home airport! LOL!

Last December we lost an engine (with a BIG bang) about 90 seconds into the flight. That was a little scary! By the time we landed, the local news crews were already at the airport. One station quoted a guy that must have been on a different flight than I was. He said the rear of the plane dropped when the engine blew - didn't happen. Said people were screaming and crying - didn't happen. Said the flight crew was yelling "brace for impact" - didn't happen. What a maroon!

As someone who is in the airline industry my only suggestions are always go direct try to avoid connecting flights if possible. Book early morning flights. As the day goes on delays for either maintenance or weather start to stack up and crews start timing out when it gets really bad.

Yup - had a friend whose plane turned around on the taxi way at DFW because they were going to time-out if the flight continued as planned.

If you fly alot, they offer perks to you. But with such few flights a year, not much. By the way, if I was going to miss half my meetings, I would have canceled and went home.

I fly a lot so I've had many detours. Once I flew to India and arrived with no luggage. Each day buying odd fitting cloths. After 4 days my luggage was found, just hours before departing to China!
