Well, we got some rain so I got out on my tractor and new to me 7 1/2' disc and made 2 passes over some ground that had been planted in wheat 4 years ago and has just been fallow since.

I then got out my new to me 2 row planter and loaded 1 hopper up with sunflowers and the other hopper up with sorghum and planted it!

Here is a picture of me running the disc:

I'm sure that is probably the worst seedbed anyone has ever taken a picture of but I'm planting it for the birds this fall so when dove season starts hopefully some of it will have made it and they will think they are in bird heaven!

Thought I would share, this is my first attempt at growing anything larger than a small garden and I'm curious how it will turn out. If anyone sees anything obvious that I'm doing wrong let me know. I figured the grass that was left might cut down on yield but hopefully wouldn't completely choke everything I planted out.

Thanks for looking.

I think planting sunflowers is for the birds. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Nice photo of worked land, which I always enjoy. I hope you keep posting to this thread as the crop yields. It should look great.

Hopefully it will grow for the birds! /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I was really somewhat suprised at how well the disc did. We got 1/2 inch of rain on 2 nights back to back and then I got out there with the disc and it was almost like I was running a rototiller. The ground was nice and fluffy about 4 or 5 inches deep. There were some spots where the grass was pretty thick that didn't work quite as well, but overall it seemed to loosen up pretty well.

I planted the seed about 2 or 3 inches deep, and it is really on the borderline of whether there is enough moisture to germinate the seed so hopefully it will rain again in the next week or two to make sure the seed gets a good start.

I will post pictures as it comes up (or as it doesn't come up!) and keep the thread updated.

Thanks for the input.

Nathan,

Nice job!! What disk did you buy? Did you add weight to it or do anything special other than just run in back and forth?
