First Baler

Hi blueriver so you think 18 mph is fast for raking you are rite but when you have 1500 bales on the ground and you still have another 8 acres to go with thunder clouds looming overhead you do whatever it takes to get done before the rain hits. by the way I was was rakeing with a 3/4 ton chevy 4x4 in bottom ground that was like driving on an interstate. And the guy baling had a AC D19. Remember this was in good old MISSOURI in the MISSISSIPPI RIVER BOTTOMS.

Will Last For a Long Time? Are you expecting never to have lay a wrench on a baler? I bought a used NH 269 (to be pulled with a 35hp tractor) and was two years getting the thing to tie. I've probable got two thousand dollars in it as well. GOOD LUCK! bjr

I still think a JD 24T won't bale hay that's thick enough to be worth baling at 15 MPH!!!!!!!

I agree. If there's anything to the hay, you can't feed that kind of volume through a small square baler. At least my 320 or 575 won't do it. Unless your hauling it as fast as it hits the ground then you don't need to be baling if it's going to rain. You are much better off to let it get wet in the windrow than in the bale.

We often rake and "roll" in the 10 mph range and it the field is really smooth we will go up to the 15 to 16 mmph range.

268 was a popular baler when you had a two row corn head on your combine. The man I help still uses one. Knotters and needles can be expensive and hard to time if you are not sure how to do it.

Gentlemen - - I think I saw Porky Pig baling hay with a JD 24T - and going that fast - in the last Wily Coyote cartoon, ha,ha. I've witnessed hay being baled at unbelievable speed - in front of an on-coming lightning/rain storm and it sure looked FAST to me. All was going reasonably well until something broke and the operation came to a loud/grinding stop.

For that small of a tractor you may look into a 4x4 baler like Krone offers. The Vermeer rebel 5410 would be a good choice also
