I can buy a dozen eggs for about $1. I don't think I could compete with that, if I had chickens. I see a lot of backyard chickens around here and speculate that that could be one reason the prices are remaining low.
Without subsidies I wonder how many people could really afford to eat how they currently do...most don't realize they're basically on welfare to some extent.

I've long held that the more necessary something is for life, the less we are willing to pay for it. Buy a 60K dollar truck with no consideration that it only gets 14mpg, no problem. Watch gas prices go up by a quarter and it's the end of the world. Some will spend buko bucks at a fancy restaurant, but complain when the weekly grocery bill goes up 10 dollars. Imagine if we had to pay for the air that we breath? Yet people do... look at all of the complaints about attempts to clean up our tractor exhaust.
