Attached are pictures of the waterer installed. Push a paddle and it fills up then drains below the frost line so it never freezes. I am training my horses on it now. They have taken several drinks- I keep a bucket of water next to it to get them comfortable with it. The way I have it set up, it services 2 paddocks. I have one more to install that will serve to water 8 horses with no hoses or troughs or ice to break in the winter. It was this project that lead me to the backhoe to begin with. LOL Now I just keep finding things to do with it.

What brand are your auto/frost free waters?

Looks good.

No opinion on the BH other than I'll bet you back appreciates it.

Doesn't it seem like all the people that recommend not owning a backhoe because they're a waste of money and you'll never actually use them don't own backhoes? It's nice isn't it? By most of the anti backhoe crowd logic ( and I'm not saying their logic is wrong) most people's whole tractor was a waste of money. I've noticed two crowds of people here. Those that don't like backhoes and those that actually have one. Sorry, rant over.

Well...party crasher here. I bought a bh-92 with the tractor. By far the worst money spent. I could rent a mini-ex a ton of times, get the job done better and faster and still have a lot of extra money to buy useful implements.

And if I put off and waited for a mini to show up and did not use the backhoe nothing would ever get done. A backhoe is very cost effective if you have lots of small projects to do , even did 600 ft of drain field with it one time, if you are unwilling to adapt to the situation then you need to rethink things.

The 500 ft of 4x8 trench for the ground source heat pump I did was best done by the mini, but unless you can keep it busy it is hard to justify the 60K machine vs the 5k second hand backhoe that was hung on the back of my tractor.

The local Kubota dealer here has close to 70 new CUT tractors on his lot. about half of them are equipped with backhoes. I asked about this when I bought my MX5800 & BH92. He says 40% of the tractors he sells are equipped with a hoe. This is farm country though and I'm sure the percentage will vary elsewhere.

In my case, I use the hoe several times a month and find it very convenient to have available on a moments notice. Yesterday for example, I had a culvert collapse on the private road I maintain. I had it dug out and ready for the concrete truck in about an hour. The road was closed for just 3 hours. It would have been a day or more if I had to rent equipment.

I do agree though that not every tractor owner can justify owning a backhoe.

Before I would own two tractors with one dedicated strictly to leave the backhoe on, I would look into purchasing a used industrial backhoe/loader. While you can accomplish quite a lot with a tractor mounted backhoe, they are not on par with an industrial machine. That or have one tractor and rent an excavator as needed.

I prefer one tractor with a backhoe, detached when not needed, but available at anytime. Besides the initial cost, having two machines is twice the maintenance and expense.

This of course depends on what type of work you do with your hoe. If I were excavating a swimming pool, I would certainly rent a machine or hire someone to do the work. The average job I do on my 25 acres does not require an industrial machine.

Just because there is a "dedicated" hoe on the back, it still leaves the front of the tractor free to attach a bucket, plow, grapple, rake etc. I find the hoe is the ultimate ballast when doing heavy work.

Every situation is different though. What works for me may not for others.

If that swimming pool is just a backyard pool I'd dig it with my backhoe before renting an excavator. It cost $400 and change to rent a 50series mini for the weekend. Plus another couple of hours getting it home and back. If it was an Olympic swimming pool I'd probably want a full size excavator on the job.

Well, I love my little backhoe on my little machine. I don't use it a lot, but it's great to have available on short notice for various projects around my property. I use it less now that I've gotten my property pretty well set up the way I want it, but it's been great to have on both of my 30hp machines. No where near as good as a mini ex for backhoe work, but most of my backhoe tasks just don't justify renting a mini ex.

I did a big job a number of years ago of picking away at a decomposed granite hillside, starting with a full size New Holland TLB rental while I was waiting for my new B3030 to arrive, and at the end of the weekend, decided it was a big waste of money as it just was taking too long to get through the rock. I hit the rest of the area with my B3030, and found it to do just as well with the smaller bucket getting through the rock (the bucket on the TLB was just too big to be all that effective). It took some time with the B3030, but I made some impressive progress on every long weekend I'd work on it. I moved a LOT of rock with that little machine, and a mini ex rental with all the proper equipment, including a hyd jackhammer, would have cost at least 1/2 of what the little backhoe cost me to buy, for just that one project. That project is long done, and I'm on my second small machine with a backhoe, and it is paid for. When the time comes to sell the machine some day, obviously the backhoe will add a significant amount to the sales price.

Something I never thought of when purchasing, but the little backhoe has been a great tool to have to be able to bury our retired sled dogs in our little dog graveyard on our property. The kids & wife like having a private place on the property to go to the grave sites every so often. I had to bury 3 dogs this winter over the span of 2 months, something that would NOT have happened if I had to do it by hand. I have also used the backhoe to bury a neighbor's horse on their property, something they were VERY grateful for. Being able to do the little things like that make a big difference in being able to keep a family pet close by, something you wouldn't do by hand on the rocky properties we live on. Sure, we all could bury little boxes of ashes, but that can get fairly expensive too, especially when you are talking about something as big as a horse. I've even been asked by the owner of a small private cemetery nearby if he could hire me to dig there.

So, no, my backhoe is nowhere near as efficient as a mini ex (boy, those are nice to dig with), but it's nice having my own backhoe to use as needed. I have no regrets buying either tractor mounted backhoe, and even with the more limited use nowadays, have no plans to sell the backhoe. I know there will be plenty of small jobs in years to come that will call for my little backhoe, and hey, even though I'm 50 now, I'm just a bigger version of the little kid that used to dig all day long with my Tonka toys in my huge childhood sandbox during my summer breaks.

You obviously didn't need a backhoe at all if you think you could have rented a mini and did all your work for less. I bought my B26 in 2010 and have over 450 hours on it, mostly with the backhoe. I have never removed the hoe except when I bought it. I was shown how easy it was to hook and unhook, but I just keep it on all the time since I have a 2nd tractor for 3 PH work.
I have dug trenches for water lines, holes to bury dead animals, dug up dead standing trees, dug up tons of rocks that continually surface on my place, used it to dig holes to plant shrubs, dug up stumps, used the hoe with thumb to pile brush, held up logs for sawing, picked up logs when I got my saw pinched, etc. Much of the work would not have ever gotten done if I had to rent a hoe. A lot of it was just convenience work, but at my age, anything to make life easier is worth the cost.

Figuring 20 hours per weekend @ $400 per rental on 450 hours of my BH use, I come out with 22.5 times @$400 (not including towing cost) = $9000 which is almost half the cost of my TLB. Rental would leave me with nothing to show for the $9000 except maybe a bit of work done.

By buying, I had the luxury of having the machine full time whenever I needed it and only a short walk from my door to the shop where it is parked. I also still have the machine to admire along with the work that it has done for me.
