First maintenance on 422....hidden \"zerk\"

ok...went and removed ALL the plates and greased all the fittings and also sprayed white lithium grease to all the areas that appear to move......installed a 90 degree fitting on the "hidden" grease outlet but could not reinstall the cover. Seems to me that unless you're willing to modify the cover somehow.... I'll have to install a fitting to lube and then remove to reinstall the cover? Then apply a grease covering over the hole to stop any dirt from entereing. Was wondering if anybody has come up with a better solution? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Just grind a V notch in the front of the horizontal cover large enough to clear the fitting!! By pointing the fitting towards the seat, only the the horizontal cover needs to be removed to install grease!!

My 425 has a slot on each side for the bolts which allows you to slide the cover back a fraction. My 90 degree sticks out without any problem.

Yup, the lazy man solution - I tossed the covers in the back of the barn. Not having to fuss with the covers encourages me to lube more regularly too /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

I spoke with Terry about that fitting. He said that one needs greased every 50 hrs and suggested greasing it when changing the engine oil. I put a fitting in and remove it after I grease .I didn't take his advise. I grease that fitting every16 hrs.

I believe this is the culprit giving you the trouble. You will notice I drilled a hole for the zerk to peep through.

I needed to take a photograph because of the excesive vertical play in the tractor. A litttle tricky but this shows how.

OK Bob,
Looking closely you will see a 1/8 inch space between the link and the upper plate. Because this link is between two 1/4 inch plates Idecided a spcer would be the best bet. The center of the link ends should be mounted tight so that all movement is in the ball end. My PT422 feels a lot sturdier now. You can see thaty I also installed a 3/4 inch straight zerk, very handy.

By the way Bob, I also installed a 3/4 inch straight zerk in the lower swivel unit. This unit also has about 3/32 inch of vertical play , I'm working on that one.
There was a total of five link ends which were turning on the bolt instead of the "ball" , I used spacers on all. a couple of others could be tightened without a spacer.
