Shemp,

I just did my first oil & filter change on my 3525 this past Sunday...

You can use the Mahindra filter from the dealer, or, Wix lists for the Mahindra 3525 #51068, which is a "short" version of Wix #51515, which is the equivalent of Fram PH8A, Motorcraft FL1A, etc. According to the Wix website, these filters are the same specs as what they recommend (#51068)... just they are about 1 1/2 inches longer in length... flow rate, microns, bypass, etc are all the same otherwise.

I put on a Fram TG8A (Fram's Premium version of the PH8A).

I filled the filter, installed it, and then put 6 quarts of Rotella 15W40 in the crankcase. After running it for a few minutes to get the filter completely filled, I shut it down, waited 10 minutes and checked the oil... it was just a hair above the "full" hole in the dipstick.

Just curious, did your dealer explicitly tell you "ABSOLUTELY NO SYNTHETIC OIL" in the engine?

FL1A huh? That's good to know since I have those laying around for my Mach 1. I just hit 50 hours a couple weeks ago so I'll be doing my oil change this weekend hopefully.

I do a lot of engine work, gasoline, as a hobby from small radio control planes and boats, 5' long in 50 mph range, to full size cars. I also do a lot of reading re engine lubes and mods and listen to car talk shows. Main show on Sat. mornings 6-8, 570 KVI. The guy on B&B auto guy, Tom Turner races cars, mainly drag racing. According to Tom, he has found no advantage in using synthetics in the motor. For gears yes. Disadvantage is that if you have the smallest if leaks in seals, gaskets etc, synthecs will find it and work their way through it. Extra money you dont need to spend, but does make people feel good.
Tom also has a performance shop and works an any kind of car from Sunday drivers to big rigs. Re diesel additive, in the NW Pacific area, Stanadine (sp) is the fuel additive that he uses and recommends.

The advantage of synthetic oil is that it doesn't break down as fast as conventional oil. Synthetic oil is more consistent and has no contaminates. Conventional oil because of it's contaminates can cause varnish and sludge buildup. Synthetics also flow better at lower temps.

As for leaks, yes you are correct that synthetic oil will fine smaller gaps in seals and can leak, but that only really occurs when you add synthetic oil to a high-mileage (or high hour) engines that have used conventional oil for most of it's life.

For a diesel tractor, I'd say the added bonus of synthetic oil is probably not worth the cost of the oil, but for a car I use nothing but synthetic. You can also go longer before changing the oil. Conventional oil is recommended to be changed every 3000 miles while synthetic can go up to 10000 miles before needing a change.

Yeah, my dealer said "Absolutely No Synthetics". Explicitly, in no uncertain terms. I really don't know why.

It's not a big deal to me, I have absolutely no problem with dino oil, I just find it curious that he told me that, and was wondering if other dealers are issuing the same warning/mandate.

Maybe it's a seal issue? I really don't know... maybe someone from Mahindra will chime in *wink* *wink*
Here's the deal. I tried giving my 2615 a few quarts of olive oil. Now, whenever I'm in the seat there is a constant barrage of Dean Martin tunes coming from the exhaust.

Just did my oil change yesterday and used about 1.6 gallons of Rotella 15W40 and a Motorcraft FL1A filter.
