And there's really not a single thing that a tractor can do that a young guy with a shovel and wheelbarrow can't.

IThat has got to be the farthest thing from truth I have hear in a long time. But makes a good sound bit.

I got to agree, work got done before there were tractors.

Either I'm confused or you are. Didn't you just completely contradict yourself in messages 147 and 149?

You know guys with shovels and wheelbarrows did most everything a tractor can do long before tractors were invented, right? Took 'em longer, lots more work, and often many guys, but it was done.

How many guys would it take to set 4,000 block? Even with my backhoe it’s a 3 guy job. I don’t think you can hire enough labor to replace my backhoe more than a couple weeks. Pretty lame comparison IMO. IMG_1042.JPG

It would take one guy with the brains to pour the concrete block where it was needed in the first place! Lol!

No, I am not confused. Unless I am too confused to know I am confused.

Please do not take my comment personal.

A young guy with a shovel and a wheelbarrow can not shred a field, much less in the time a tractor can. A days work for a tractor and a days work for a young guy is vastly different.

Not to mention the personal satisfaction that an old man gets just driving a tractor.
That last one alone is very important. I get much more from driving my tractor than from watching a young guy with a shovel.

I still think it was a good sound bit. Keep up the good work.

Might do a little study of the Egyptians!

:)
I do not want to get too far off topic.

This could have been interesting.

I thought about going there with the 'moving a block' bit, but I held back. There was Easter Island too and a host of others.

Today, it would be considered impossible to do those tasks without machines. As I recall, there was an experiment somewhere in the last ten or twenty years and it failed, sort of miserably. They proved it COULD be done the old ways, but nobody wanted to do it for very long.

That would have been a good start but how many men would it take to pour 100 tons of concrete in a day? Plus the time to dig the footer and build the form? Laying blocks would be easier and cheaper than a solid pour but still a lot of work.
