My friend, Bill, grew up on a farm in Tennessee and attended a one room country school. He said that, like all the other boys, he wore bib overalls to school.
Now Bibs are a great invention says Bill.
When your hands are cold, you can put them between the bib and your shirt and warm them. And after you have been working hard, like hoeing, you can put your arms behind the bib and rest them for awhile.
But, he said, the greatest thing was he used them to cheat on arithmetic tests in school. He would look at the addition problems and put his hands behind the bib, appearing to be in deep concentration, while he counted on his fingers.
Doing that, Bill almost flunked out of second grade arithmetic until he discovered that he didn't have eleven fingers.

We thought about burying him in them, but he will have to rest in peace with a suit.

At his request, Dad got a plain pine box wearing his carpenter jeans covered in glue, paint, caulking and garden dirt, and a ratty tee in the same condition. May as well be comfy...

^^ Love that!

Gotta show up dressed for work!

BTW, around here, I once mentioned wearing "coveralls". After the shocked and disapproving looks, I was schooled that they are to be called - "overhauls".

The best part about bib overalls is that there is no belt or waist band. Climbing on and off a tractor or bending over in the garden is much easier without something pinching your mid section. Also, sawdust, wood chips and bugs tend to fall on through without much delay -- last week a chigger got under my shirt and worked his way around my beltline until I was well bit. But overalls would have let him pass through.

Plus for really hard work, they offer a layer of armor -- that bib offers protection when carrying firewood, lumber, tools, et al.

I have a variety for different occasions -- lightweight for summer, lined for winter, white for special occasion's, and even some made from a heavy Scottish wool just for Thanksgiving at the cabin. I like Dickies and Wear Guard much better than Carhartt for lots of reasons [fit, cut, buttons, length of zippers, lining, etc.] and they are much cheaper. Plus those engineer pin stripes make a real fashion statement for the man outstanding in his field -- pun intended.

If I remember correctly, the brand we wore was "Roundhouse".

I started wearing them again a couple of years ago. I was using the tractor two to 5 days a week and usually managed to trash a pair of jeans most every time I climbed on the tractor. about the only ones I can find locally are Keys, or Liberty. They are light enough to wear over a pair of jeans and heavy enough thet in colder weather I very seldom need long johns. Plenty comfy, and I haven't totally trashed a pair of jeans in a couple of years.
