Now have found four tractors to look at:

Massey 65
1969 Massey 135
1968 JD 2120
Ford 5000

If the weather holds I am going to try to look at most of them tomorrow.

nuttin wrong with the mf 65 or 135.. good solid tractor.

ford 5000 is one of fords best models.

my info on the jd says 69 as the first year of production.. but that could be a model year code, with units produced in late 68. about 68 eng, and 60 pto.

ford 5000, if a later model with the 256 engine will make 70 eng, and 67 pto. Figure about 38 pto for the 135, and maybee 48-50 on the 65.

if the ford is a 256ci model ( press in freeze plugs ) it will have the better steering setup too.. hopefully it's an 8spd.. if so.. it would be my choice.. with the 65 perhaps as the next choice.

( I freely admit I'm a ford collector :) )

Looks like the Ford is the biggest of the tractors and the MF135 is the smallest.

The JD is the only one listed as a diesel, is this a positive or a negative? I know they are better for economy but are they more headache for repairs?

The closest dealer of these manufactures is a JD dealer that is only about a 5 min drive.

I know a little bit about the MF65 as my father-in-law has one. I was able to fins photos of each, of course you can see a lot in the photos though.

Thanks to everyone for their help.

there were gasser fords... generally hungry considering the hp you are making.. though.. still a darn good tractor.

it's true.. diesels will require less hands on maintenance. IE.. just keep the oil , and filters changed, and use clean fuel .. pretty much that will get you about 4000-6000 hours of use before you may need engine work. when you do need engine work.. it will likely be injectors or pump.. that will require a shop usually.. then you spend some money... could be a thousand for a pump rebuild and injector work.. maybee less.. probably more..

with gassers.. you dink with points every year.. maybee clean the carb every couple years.. change the plugs when you change the oil, change the plug wires every few years.. etc. IE.. you pay along the way.. however when something like say... the carb goes out.. it takes like 10 minutes to change and costs 50$ for a kit.. or as much as 200-300 for a new one.. at the very most usually... and takes a couple hand tools.. nothing special.

IMHO.. I like gassers up to about 50hp.. above that I like to go to diesel.

give em a call see what they are.
