First-timer Building a Pole Barn

Jzz- The thing I 'really' liked, was the second floor for stowage, that you don't get with customary trusses! The thing I didn't like, was the anticipated "bill" for those monster I-Beams, that he had to buy. Those gotta be 'pricey"!!! All in all, a neat video, and awesome building! I want one bad!! KennyD's photo alblum, also has a 'class-build'!~Scotty

Wow! I really like the pervious concrete. Need to check the cost, though because we do need to keep a budget in mind. They estimated that the building will cost around $11,250.00 without any frills. (It's 40' x 32'). But the pervious concrete would solve the drainage problems. I also think I like the idea of just dropping a couple of bags of concrete (in the bag) down the hole and backfilling with gravel. That's got to be a lot less than pumping concrete (which will run a little under $500.00).

Code here in Colorado is limiting me to "engineered trusses." The good news is that because they are made from 2 x 6's, I will only need five of them.

I also like the looks of the Wood Joinery Systems. They do look a little pricey though.

Well, crushed rock is in the hole, 10" deep, 2 feet in diameter. Next, we'll be building the uplift cleats and dropping the poles in the hole. Then, I'll do some final research on what else goes down there.

Thanks everyone for your input. Got a lot of great ideas.

Have you looked into the quonset style steel buildings? Mine is about 6 years old now, but I put up a 25' x 30' for around $7,000 - $7500 back then, including concrete. It has more of a peak on it than traditional quonset huts. First I poured a footer and got the building up. The following year I poured the floor. Later on I built a free standing 12x12 loft for some more storage area.
Good for the storage that I use it for, I don't heat it. But of course another summer toy (Mustang GT) came along since then as well as a tractor/implements so the building is now full up.
Got it from Future Steel out of Canada.

Sorry to dig up an old thread. I'm building a barn soon and noticed the links here re: the protective "sleeves" around the posts. Also, I read about concrete to the top of the hole vs. just at the base and fill w/ gravel. Has anyone of you painted the portion of the post that's in the ground w/ a sealant, such as a tar based foundation sealant (i.e. roofing tar), or even coated the posts w/ something like the Rhino bedliner stuff ? As long as the sealant doesn't get scraped off when placing the post, I would think it would protect pretty good from water.

Also wondered about spray on undercoating????

We are in the preliminary stages of building a pole barn. The holes are dug. They are 24" in diameter. They will have a 10" concrete layer in the bottom of the pole. The poles are 14" at the butt. This allows for 10" of concrete around each hole, 48" deep. Can you tell me what strength concrete I will need? Thank you!

"Oops, I did not realize this thread was so old"

According to this Colorado handout you can use concrete or compacted earth for your posts. Pretty clear to me I'd use compacted earth or crushed stone.
