I have owned a few Mitchell's. Open face reels have come a long way since then.

I bought some of the first quick fires on the market way back when... Still is about all I use WHEN I get fishing. My brother was my fishing buddy since we were kids, we were fishing when our sister passed away & both of us felt bad about not being there. We didn't get fishing much after that as things went down hill, he has since passed away too and it has been 4 years with only one or twice fishing with his son (my nephew.) He is 25 & has lots of other friends to fish/hunt with, I'm living 50 miles away too so I just pretty much have stopped.

I have some nice equipment & lots of lures too generally still window shop the gear section of any store I stop into... I have a real nice 8 or 9 weight flyrod for bigger bass but works well for anything I sure can wrap up some line in every tree within a hundred yards with it :/

I am a totally dedicated pan fisher that uses bait. Always I have used an ultralight rod and reel combo with 6 pound test line. Every now and then I get tangled up with some nasty, stinky, and worthless 5-6 pound large mouth bass. And an occasional 20-30 pound catfish. Or some gosh awfull big carp. These pesky things can tear up some ultralight stuff if it isn't really good.

We've been flying into outpost cabins in northern Ontario for about 35 years, as the wives allowed it. We troll with Rapalas and Hot n Tots mostly and once we figured out that all the snags were close to shore and the fish were farther out, our lures started lasting for years and years. But in the last, say five, years or so, we noticed that these old standby lure designs, but manufactured recently, weren't lasting for even a week. At minimum, the clear coating peeled off. Sometimes the paint. Sometimes the plastic lips pulled out. Don't know if it's planned obsolescence or shoddy workmanship. Sent a note one year to the manufacturer. No response.

I have Shimano spinning reels too. I do like the quickfire but the newer instant anti-reverse are nice too. The quickfire with the push button spool are my favorite pan fishers. This style of reel has the bottom drag which is very easy to use.

For baitcasters I absolutely love the old style round Abu Garcia's. Like the C3, C4 and C5's. I think I have about 12 of them now. ha ha

Yes, the Mitchell series were great. I also have a lighter version called a 304 or 314.
