Is the handle solid? The reason I ask is that the last Fiskar tool I used had a hollow handle and it seemed to transfer the shock of striking. It was a hatchet. Worked well on kindling but would have been better with a solid handle. Planned on filling the butt end with silicone. It joined several other tools in the never to be seen again file before I could effect a cure.

The handle is hollow and light. I find the shock fairly light.

I bought my first one (now called the X11) a couple of years ago. Then Canadian Tire released the X25 (still 28" but heavier) and I got that. This year they brought in the X27 (36") and I got that. Felt like a low-tech version of the "feature creep" computer companies use to sell more product.

The short handles of the X11 and X25 make them a bit dangerous. One has to be sure to keep the hands low as the blade hits the log. The X27 feels safer.

I split my wood small so use the X27 for large splitting and storing before moving into the shed. I use the smaller axes for final splitting at the shed.

The X25's handle broke after a year. It separated about 10" along the upper and lower sides. The head was still in place OK. It split with a normal blow but I perhaps weakened it with a few overstrikes (THOSE are shocking and rattle the bones:eek:) during its life.

There's a lifetime guarantee and Canadian Tire replaced it free of charge.

They are great axes--it's me that needs the improving.

I just got an x27 for an early Christmas present, and I gotta say "WOW". Earlier this year I cut down a sweet gum tree. Using an axe or a maul was an exercise in frustration. With wedges, it usually took ten or eleven whacks to drag a wedge through a round. As you could guess, this was exhausting!

My first impression of the x27 was that it was lighter than I imagined a maul should be. The leading edge was also very sharp. The balance and grip seemed very comfortable, so I figured I'd try it out. As an initial trial, I grabbed a piece of the sweet gum and set it up on my splitting stump. After careful consideration of the physics involved, I wound up and swung the Fiskars over my head. SLAM! Right through the round!!!! I was shocked!

This maul works much better than my 12 lb splitting maul, my axe, wedges, or throwing firewood in frustration (most satisfying but least effective IMO). I've only used it this one time, but there wasn't anything that didn't split after two or three whacks. I'm sold, thanks mom!

Mark me down as another big fan of the X27!!! I think I"m going to like it much better than an 8 lb maul.

have you seen the video of the trick for keeping the round together while splitting...there are variations but one is to use a small gauge chain (like for hanging a front porch swing) and a bungee cord wrapped around the piece to keep it together and standing upright for splitting...keeps you from chasing the wood which you can see can go a ways from the energy generated from this little axe...
