Hi Everyone,

New to the forum, I have owned a PT-422 for a couple of years and generally like it a lot. I've spent some time reading a lot of other posts here, and I would say my experiences mirror most others.... ranging from the cold starting "problem" of the earlier Robin engines.... /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif to really appreciating the quick attach front end.. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Now, I'm considering an upgrade to a 1430, mostly due to the increased lifting cap. Also, I'm a diesel fan... (I even drive a diesel Jetta), and I expect if I do buy a 1430 it will be last tractor I ever buy. So, my question... (and I suspect this was answered before, but my searches didn't turn anything conclusive), can the smaller inpliments be "adopted" to the larger machines, and if so, can anyone comment on issues?

For example, I have the 48" tiller and I really don't a 60" model that's offered for the 1430. If it's just a matter of hydro adaptors...I'm fine with that. If the adaptor plates are different, well, that's tougher, and may not be worth it. Other impliments I have are the drill head, spreader, and brush cutter.

Thanks in advance for any comments, recommendations, or general "are you nuts... /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif" kinda responses.

BTW, I'm in Allentown, PA... so yep, another PA dirt digger...

Good morning and welcome to TBN! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Unfortunately, I think the adapter plates are smaller and thinner for the 4xx implements than for the 1430. I think the 1430 uses the same size as the 1845 and 1850, and has the same lift capacity. The PTO is probably also higher flow, but you could probably use the implements with any necessary adapters if you don't abuse them.

I suggest that we build an adapter plate adapter. It would have a PT422/425 lift arm plate welded to a 1430 attachment plate. It would include some hydraulics etc. This does not seem too difficult. I have about 14 PT422 attachments and would like to use them if I bought a 1430.

Any thoughts?

Bob,

I would be interested in building an adaptor... or depending on how many impliments I keep, it might be easier to have the 425 impliment mountings "modified" to accept the larger plate?

Are you thinking of a "manual" adaptor that you move from impliment to impliment by hand, or something more sophisticated, with it's own hydro latch? Some sort of spring loaded latch and plate assembly, welded up to an 1430 recepticle might be light enough that it could just be moved from one 425 impliment to another by hand, but it wouldn't be quite as nice as just having a larger adaptor welded right on the impliment.

I suspect that we could just buy some ready made hydraulic adaptors, but I really don't have much experience in this area.

I would expect the adapter to stay on the 1430. You drive up to the 42X attachments just as you normally would. During the use the quick attach cylider on the 1430 would be disconnected and its hydraulics would be hooked up to the 422 quick attach plate. No attachments would be modified.

My experience with hydraulics is also limited.

Mine, too, but so far I've found things easier than I expected. On my 1845, I mounted a diverter valve in the tilt circuit so I didn't have to use the quick attach/aux pto circuit to open & close the 4 n 1, curl the hoe, etc. A manual or electric diverter valve and a couple of hoses in the aux pto circuit would allow you to open and close the latches on the adapter and keep the main quick attach function. A lot easier is just to switch hoses to the adapter after you hook it to the 1430 and use the adapter latches for the 4xx attachments.
Bubenberg is in the throes of his spring mowing and landscape work, so has no free time. If there's a break in his schedule, however, maybe he and I and our machines can meet at his prototype fabricator's (Steve Fisher) place in Pennsylvania. If there's a market for three or four, it might be worthwhile for Steve. But, we don't want to ruin somebody's fun project.
Any interest?

Bob, I can see the advantages of keeping the adaptor with the tractor... but in my case I was assuming a mix of attachments, so something would still have to be "manually" removed if going from a 42x class implement to a 14xx class implement. That's why I was thinking along the lines of moding the implements. But if I had mostly 42x attachments, I would go the way you suggest.

I think in my case I'd mostly be switching between say a bucket (where I would want the larger/heavier 14xx version to take advantage of that 1200 lb lift cap... /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif), and a 42x brush cutter or tiller, which are big enough for my needs now.

Charlie, I'm game for seeing what you guys come up with, I believe I could build my own (given enough time..... /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif), but I have so many other "projects" started, that I'd consider a ready to go solution if something was available.

I think the adapter adapter would be the way to go. That way you don't have to modify the tractor or the implements. You just need the PT1400 series female plate, the male PT400 plate w/ quick attach, some hoses and fitting adaptors and a few pieces of steel stock. It should pop on and off just as easily as any other PT attachment, which means 15 seconds for non-powered implements and about 30 seconds for the powered ones. Sounds like a very doable project.
