Our scrap yard never sells "items", only "material, by the pound", likely for the same reason.
SIMS Metal Management, where I sell and buy steel is an international recycler that has over
200 locations worldwide, including in 19 US states.
When I go to recycle something, such as a car body, or other scrap steel, I see the most amazing things
being thrown away. The workers there will NOT let you take anything as you empty your load. Once,
a couple of years ago I saw a newish bicycle that was in the heap. I convinced the workers to let me
take it, but initially they refused. It only needed new tires.
Back to SIMS. They sell new steel and surplus steel as well as buy scrap. Often they will take some serviceable
item and move it to the sales yard, and offer it for sale. There usually are weight machines for sale there
that have nothing wrong with them. This kind of stuff is sold for about 50c/lb, for the most part, unless it
is stainless, Cu, or Al.
If you live near one of the many SIMS locations, you should visit sometime. Bring your truck.
BTW, a few weeks ago, they were buying steel at $58/ton. Pays for the gas.
