Fixing Flats

Re: Fixing Flats-The digital way...

Thanks, John. I don't think I'll be doing it very often but wondered how.

Hey, Bird!

The basic caveat to displaying pictures in-line with the messages is that the file must already be on a server somewhere (like TBN's, for example). Then you can use John's instructions jes' fine. /w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif

Harv, I asked Muhammad about putting audio files as attachments (regular method at end of post) and he said fine as long as there were no copyright problems. The [image]...[/image] method works really well for illustrating something. You can do a web search for the photo or illustration you want, and then link to it so it shows up in the post. It's a pretty neat tool as John Miller III (the king of image posts /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif) will attest. I also don't think it takes up local server space as do the attachments. My only worry is getting Muhammad in trouble if we do the image link. Since you are an "internet geek," do you have any idea about the copyright implications? Anybody else want to chime in here? My appologies ERNIEB. This ain't really about FIXIN FLATS.

jinman,

As I recall, you wanted to post the sound of a NH engine. I will let Muhammad worry about copyright infringement, but let me pose two hypothetical situations.

If NH has copyrighted the sound of its engines, then they could sue anyone who infringes that copyright by reproducing that sound. However, if they havent copyrighted the sound of their engine, then you could. Then, you could sue NH or anyone else who fires up a NH engine and makes your copyrighted noise.

Sounds like a good business opportunity. Like cybersquatting.

Or is it really just a flat tire.

I thought there must be a catch to it somewhere./w3tcompact/icons/tongue.gif

Wasn't worried about sound, glenmac. I was more worried about things like the ear protectors that I put in one of my posts to you about your air compressor question. I just searched the web and quickly found a picture and dropped it in my message. I'm lazy that way./w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif ...and I won't be copyrighting my NH sound unless I can get enough tractors together to make a Xmas album like the Barking Dogs. Hmmmm...might be a business opportunity here./w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

Jim -

Muhammad knows considerably more about copyright issues on the internet than I do. In fact, a while back I was preparing to put online a whole bunch of pictures I scanned out of catalogs and brochures, and Muhammad and others on this board scared me into nixing the whole idea.

The world wide web is a funny new frontier, and the laws aren't fully written yet. On the one hand, I've heard that anything you toss out there on your own website automatically becomes public, at least in terms of someone being able to download a copy for themselves. At the same time, I believe it is illegal (not 100% sure about this) to display images from someone else's web site "as if" it were yours. There is a whole bunch of "intellectual property" issues here that I don't pretend to understand, but I have taken to keeping my own websites squeaky clean by using only original or officially sanctioned materials.

I often wonder about message boards, though. It seems like there is/should be more latitude for a group of people just discussing a topic and using visual aids from elsewhere on the web. Muhammad? I'm floundering here. You got any straight scoop to share?

As for tractor flats -- my plan is to never have one. So far, so good. /w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif
