I swapped PTO shafts and no change, so it's got to be something with the main rotor... Going on vacation for a week then will look into it. I did put a 6' level across the rotor between the stations today and it does look straight. Neighbor has a dial indicator that we can use to check the rotor. Then I guess I'll take all the flails off and see if it still vibrates. Then I guess I'll take the rotor out and try to get it balanced. I hope that's the end of the money spending part of this!

The unexpected solution to my problem was buying another flail mower! I was at an equipment dealer picking up a piece of equipment for work, and while waiting for them to finish up, I walked around their yard and spotted a Rhino RHD88 in the weeds. I asked about it and they said it needed new blades and new roller bearings. I recognized that this Rhino was just a rebadged/painted Alamo SHD88, and that all of the parts that I had just bought for my machine would fit this one, which was actually in better shape and about 15 years newer. So, for $400, I brought it home, swapped a few parts around and now have a fantastically running stout unit. I’ve stripped my Alamo of all of the remaining good usable parts (driveshaft/slip clutch, main cutter shaft bearings, pulleys, gearbox, cross shaft, roller, etc. and will scrap the main housing. I’m going to save the cutter shaft and eventually try to find someone that might be able to fix it (I really think the one stub end is just not machined true and was the source of the vibration). Next job is to paint the Rhino unit.

I use to work at a municipality and repair these alamo mowers. They absolutely best the ever living **** out of them. I have replaced many bearings, blades, belts, belt guards, and rollers and even would weld new flail ears on. the thing that made them junk was a bent cutting shaft. If I remember that part was about 75% of a new unit.
