I'm interested in purchasing a 90" flail mower to mow 6-8 acres of grass at my home. There is quite a bit of exposed ledge on my property that has taken its toll on my finish mowers' spindles and blades! I'm able to buy a 90" Alamo for a very reasonable price. The unit has brush blades on it currently. Can I obtain a "better" cut by just switching to fine cutting blades? Is this the only difference between a rough cut and a finish cut on a flail mower? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif Thanks ... Scozz
ONE FURTHER QUESTION:I suspect that even the cut of a rough flail would be equal to or better that the cut of my finish mower which left behing rows of uncut grass if the grass was more than 5" (which was QUITE often) any opinions on this?

Yes, I believe. The brush cutting blades are Y shaped, whereas the fincutting blades are T shaped.

Scozz…
Depends on the manufacture…. I have a mott 'finish cut' flail, it has MANY more knifes and hangers than my Ford or JD 'rough cut' flail.

Although a blade style change could help, I don’t think you will get a true finish cut unless you can get the knife number increased… KennyV.

alot of finish flail mowers run faster than rough cut flails, i know our mott book shows a different sized pulley for each
