The direction just might be determined by the shape of the blades. Some flails turn clock wise, and others turn counterclockwise. If the flail turns the correct way by pulling, then it should also work on the front if you don't switch it around. The hydraulics units can be reversed easily.

Thanks JJ. It has double sided 'Y's on it right now, although I rotated them last fall to put the sharp edge forward, so I'll either have to sharpen them, or else get a new set.

Mechanically though - gearbox, etc - there's no reason why it can't spin backwards?? I actually would make it a hydraulic unit, and run it off the same system as my proposed hydraulic snowblower project. I suppose I could just run the hyd motor in whatever direction is called for, and mount up the flail in it's proper direction.
