Where could I get the best deal (price and quality) on an 8' to 10' flail mower? I'm asking for a neighbor who wants one to run behind an 85hp tractor.

New or used? I bought a Ford flail a few years ago from a dealer, got a good price on it. I just bought another one, a JD 25A from a dealer in Indiana, found it on the net searching used farm equipment.

Hmmm, Paul, I wasn't thinking too well when I posted that. I guess we had in mind new ones; however, I've known this neighbor for quite awhile and know that if he can find a used one at a good price, that would be his preference. Of course, it would need to be about 60 miles south of Dallas, plus or minus 50 or 60 miles.

I know that John Deere and Case/IH have used equipment locators in thier sites, I'm sure that the other major manufactures have the same. I've also run searches on Yahoo for used equipment and have found quite a bit. I'll do a little surfin and see what I can find.

Hayden, I'm not sure I know enough, or have the right vocabulary to answer your question. They're mowers that are somewhere between a finish mower and a brush hog; look more like a tiller but swinging some L shaped knives that cut the grass. You're right on, Bird. The rear roller on the flail that supports the unit, is quite close to the flails, like an anti-scalp roller on a rotary mower. With the flail, it is very unlikely to throw derbis when hit, and safer to use around people. There are heavy duty flails, like orchard flails, that have heavy duty knives that chop tree limbs. Another feature about flails, it discharges cut grass over the width of the unit, and does not windrow like a rotary can. A while back, I had a Ford 5' flail, and it used it to mow 5 acres around the house, and it produced a very good cut. I'm still waiting for my JD 25A to be delivered, the way the weather is going, that will have to wait for next summer.
