Maybe its running too lean?

If anything, I 'assume' issue is either running too rich, or exhaust valve failure, , not real experienced with these type of engines, but, thats why I am posting here hoping to get more info than take to a shop which I can't afford to. Been off work for near 2 years and picked up this machine to dig post holes to try an eek out some sort of existence, , , Picture 002.jpgPicture 001.jpg

First thing you need to do is pull the plugs an check what color they are. black and crudded, too Rich. Clean and or white, too lean or right on.

Do that first, take a picture and share with us.

Probably runnin lean. I would check filter and fuel pump. Make sure you have a clean tank and the gas vent cap isn't plugged. If those check rebuild replace the carb. Then onto timing and valves. Crazy machine. What is your engine specifics?

I have a Kohler LH755 mounted on a RAMROD 950,Picture 006r.jpgPicture 001r.jpgPicture 002r.jpgPicture 003r.jpg with serious heat issue, , , ports from cylinders get cherry red, , ,
have replaced / re gapped plugs to .030, did compression test - 140 psi, pulled flywheel to check Woodruff key - pristine, ( cleaned magneto coil and magnets while flywheel off ), check throttle body of carb for movement - ok, ,

I have to ;assume' that exhaust valve is the issue but not sure how to move forward on it, , any ideas are appreciated.Picture 001.jpg

new fuel, fuel line and filter, FM vent cap on tank, pulled flywheel - woodruff key ok, clean magneto and magnets and pick ups, re-set pick ups to 0.30", new plugs - gapped .030"

ran tests as suggested,


1 - idle speed an record temps muffler complete

2- avg running speed muffler complete

3- avg running speed muffler removed

well part 4 of this experiance, , ,

was able to get a small engine mechanic over to go thru the unit
1- governor / choke / throttle linkage gummed up, as throttle increased, so did choke come on, , clean all an move independently now
FINALLY got word back from KOHLER, their engines do run hot at exhaust port, , thats why mots of their machine shave exhaust / muffler tight to the engine an real close to the exhaust ports of cylinders, ,
went to MOPAC in calgary an got a few rolls of exhaust / header wrap and got at it, , ,
also, replaced exhaust port gaskets, ,

needless to say, after dropping idle speed to 1100 rpm, wrapping exhaust and including heat shield(s), new gaskets, linkage cleaned an smooth operation, 90% of problems eliminated, , runs smooth, wwaaaayyyy quieter and looks good, , ,

never assume what you bought used is 'good', , check over everything an get a decent knowledgeable person to help diagnose, , going in circles is not the answer, , and most importantly GET THE MANUALS FOR YOUR EQUIPMENT !!!

Nice!

Watch those tires to be sure they don't get too hot. I wrapped the exhaust too, and put the muffler on the outside, seems like the engine compartment is a little cooler.

Temperature at exhaust pipe to muffler is about 250, , added a shield at collector discharge :thumbsup:

Replace the condenser.
