I知 looking for recommendations for a low profile floor jack for very occasional use. I need to change the oil in the Miata and I want to jack it up and set it on jack stands. There痴 a few for <$100 on amazon. Anyone have experience with those?

I have one of the HF 1 1/2Ton aluminum jacks. Going on 8 years now and works fine with no problems. Same jack is currently on sale in the April flyer for $59.99

The HF 1 1/2 ton aluminum "racing" jack is great for a small car like a Miata. I used it for my Mazdaspeed3 and our Golfs. It does not have enough capacity or go high enough for my Tundra so I got one of the Daytona 3 ton jacks when it was on sale.
If you're working in a restricted space then you might want a jack with a smaller handle. The typical auto store trolley style jacks work ok for small cars too, and their short handles get in the way less than the long ones on the jacks above. I've got a couple of those too.

I got one at Harbor Freight. Works just like the jacks we had in service station years ago but very low profile. Just turn handle to lock for jacking and pump to go up.
Got a Miata, too, curse those Japanese who keep putting the oil filter underneath. Piss on them. Suck the oil out but have to go underneath for the filter on all 3 Jap vehicles. The Miata's is a special PITA. Need a zip lock bag to keep from losing oil from the filter.

For a Miata it wouldn't matter much but I would avoid the rapid pump (or what ever they call it) style jacks. These are the ones that go from as low as possible to all the way up in 3 pumps or so. Often it takes a fair bit of force to make it happen. I'm not doing a NASCAR style pit stop so if it takes me 10 pumps vs 2 I can live with it. In fact with the 10 pump model I often take one section of the handle off.

I have a couple but if I ever bought another, it would probably be alluminium and definitely with speedy lift or whatever you call it.

I have a steel 3 ton with that feature (whatever it is called) and I would not be without it. I would want aluminum if I had to carry a jack often, but in my present circumstances I do not.

1500 pound aluminum racing jack may be alright for a Miata, but mine struggles to even get a tire off the ground of my Silverado 1/2 ton PU.... But then I bought jack when I needed a light weight one for taking to track when autocrossing a 1600 pound car....

Amen! That's the one. Note, the 'speed lift' style, same price, doesn't say 'low profile'.
Sure, HF has some very inexpensive jacks well under $100. You'll find a lot of hydraulic jacks out there for a lot more money, but I've found that when you actually see them, you'll realize they're very flimsy - not something that I'd want to trust holding my car up while I'm underneath. Don't scrimp in exchange for your safety.
But you'll do well to go with the best they have, i.e. the Daytona Long Reach.

I use these every day for work and yes it's Chinese but works very well, two stage pump and will lift that 3/4 ton pickup or your tractor. If you're going to spend the $200 get one that will lift and last.
And yeah Miata's are a PITA as the oil filter is not in a good spot to access.
