Do you want a professional opinion?

Thinset over the 3/4 " subfloor with 1/4" notched trowell
Install the 1/2" cement board onto the fresh Thinset and screw down with stainless steel 1 1/4" screws 6" spacing on edges and 8" in the field
Install all joints tight and leave 1/4" gap at walls
Next day, tape and float all joints with Thinset , let dry 24 hours
Now you are ready to lay your new ceramic flooring

Just about nailed my plans!

Only difference is I'm using 1 1/2" screws. (whoopee)

Discovered last night that one of my outlets seems to be bad (GFCI) Nothing on the outlet is working (getting power to it) and nothing beyond it is working however, the light (which is wired to the same source) is working fine.

I've never come across a bad outlet. This is brand new (probably 12 months old but never put into service until now)

Never had a gfi go that quick but have had a couple over the years

If the GFCI is one where you have "inputs" on one side and outputs on the other, double check that
1. the inputs are not hooked where the outputs should be, and
2. that you haven't got the line and neutral both hooked to the in and outs of the line (or neutral) and the the downstream line and neutral both on the neutral (or line) connections. Basically, hooked backwards or 90 degrees out.

I've seen crazier things...

Yep...

I had three blacks with hot on "right". Seems I was wrong and the true hot was on the left so I ultimately had the light hooked directly to the feed and I guess I was backfeeding something to the others (so they'd show hot while energized)

Once I realized I had the blacks flipped, everything worked like a charm.

Excellent, I'm glad it was something so easy to fix.
