Same thing happened to mine.It was about a year old and always garaged. From what I understand the replacement one has a flap of some sort to protect it from water.I agree with you though, poor part quality.

There is a small cover available for the tilt cylinders. It might take a little probing to get the parts person to find it, but it is there.

Jinman, thanks for your' advice. Tried hard to buy the cylinder from the local dealer but after an unanswered email and two non-returned phone calls I gave up on them. Bush Mechanic time ! Cut 2 30mm long pieces of 12mm copper water pipe and split them lengthwise. Prised the split open enough to slip over the shaft of the leaking hydraulic cylinder. Squeezed the first one closed with pliers and put the second one on top of the first with the split opposite (ie 2 thicknesses of copper pipe). Put two small diameter worm drive hose clamps on to keep everything tightly closed. Finally, jammed a squishy rubber ball down behind the steering column where it' lodges against metal, not fiberglass. Have since mowed 18 acres of very high grass with no problems and the column still lifts up to allow ingress/egress. The 30mm length is perfect wheel position for me but everyone is different.

Guys.. not sure if my problem is what you are speaking of. My tilt column unlocked (lever went down) and won't go back up.. I just bought this tractor privately used. It has 156 hours and has been garage kept. HOWEVER that said I bought it from Widow who just used it and didnt to much maintenance after her husband died... Any thoughts?

Pull the lower cowling off under the steering wheel to verify that it is indeed the cylinder and get ready to pull out the wallet. The cylinder is relatively easy to replace.

Check post #8 in this thread to see the substitute adjuster that I made. This has been on the tractor longer than the original was. It uses a set screw with a long handle to keep the wheel in place. The long handle adjusts the wheel very quickly, smoothly and easily. I like it very much and it will never leak all of the oil out. I can take some better pictures if you want.

If I thought that there was a market for it I would make a few for sale. Most people don't seem as agrivated by the failing shocks as I did though. I will admit that I just wanted to get by when I made up my adjuster but it has worked much better than I expected it to. If I were to sell some they would be a bit more refined in appearance than mine is even though you can't see them behind the cowling.
