Chalk one up in the stupid column. I went back and looked again. The plug broke off deep enough in the bore that I could not see that there was a little piece of thread from the old plug still there. It broke at an angle so the portion that I could feel turned out to be the inside surface area of the broken plug as you had suggested. The old one is out and the new one is in. Thanks for the advice!
